I class myself as being a proactive individual who offers exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities to the emergency services role. I have strong clinical skills and judgement for responsive patient support. Building rapport and relationships quickly for compassionate, personalised care is essential to best patient outcomes. I hold a passion about long term health conditions, including diabetes and COPD, and regularly carry out rapid response vehicle shifts seeing these patient, with am aim of seeing and treating to prevent hospital admission. I have a good understanding of diabetes as my brother was diagnosed with it from a young age, and I believe this is what underpins my interest in the subject. I would however always welcome any additional support or training that can broaden and strengthen my knowledge and skills further.
The skills I have developed throughout my time working in the ambulance service I believe are equally transferable to a GP practice. I am confident at seeing any patient with acute needs; carrying out a comprehensive holistic assessment that encompass not just the symptoms, but the physical and mental health needs of the patient as well as home surroundings and safety.
In addition to the routine paramedic skills I am trained in wound closure with the use of steri-strips and glue. I am also a trained vaccinator. Furthermore I am a well-being ambassador with the ambulance service and have an active interest in mental health; for both colleagues and patients. Throughout my time as a paramedic I have taken any additional training that has been available around mental health, however I would really like to extend this further if you had any training to offer. I am currently undertaking an ILS trainers course to allow me to teach ILS and assess as necessary, this will ensure I keep my ILS standards/skills up to date. Having this trainers qualification could be transferred to your staff in maintaining their professional updates. I do not have a prescribers qualification but would be happy to work towards getting that in the future.
Going forward I would like to maintain some ambulance shifts, just to sustain my on the road skills, I would also like to do the odd training sessions as an ILS instructor. Having attended an informal chat with Ann she suggested this would not be an issue and would be something you would actively encourage.
