ON 29 NOVEMBER, DURING A BATTALION OPERATION IN THE VILLAGE OF MAMA KAREZ, SERGEANT MITZLAFF’S SQUAD CAME UNDER EFFECTIVE SMALL ARMS FIRE FROM AN INSURGENT 30 METERS AWAY WHO WAS FIRING DOWN ON THEM FROM A ROOFTOP. THE PLUNGING FIRE FROM THE ENEMY SNIPER RESTRICTED HIS SQUAD'S ABILITY TO MANEUVER OR EFFECTIVELY RETURN FIRE. RECOGNIZING THE SERIOUS THREAT TO THE LIVES OF HIS MEN, SERGEANT MITZLAFF BOLDLY EXPOSED HIMSELF TO THE HAIL OF ENEMY FIRE IN ORDER TO EMPLOY AN M67 FRAGMENTATION GRENADE. HIS AUDACIOUS ACTION SHOCKED THE ENEMY AND SEIZED THE INITIATIVE, HALTING ALL ENEMY FIRE AGAINST HIS MARINES' POSITION WHICH ALLOWED HIS SQUAD TO MANEUVER AGAINST THE THREAT AND REPEL THE ATTACK.
