I am currently an inpatient psychiatric nurse practitioner working at the South Dakota Human Services Center.
While with Blue Cross I learned a great deal about managed care and was able to collaborate with several departments in the organization. I regularly completed reviews with inpatient substance abuse treatment facilities in every region of the United States for levels of care such as inpatient detox, rehabilitation, residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient.
Brylin is a private inpatient psychiatric treatment facility. They serve a generally higher functioning population than I had previously been exposed to while working in a state hospital. It was here that I had my first experiences with truly active treatment and different psychotherapeutic modalities.
While with Tyson foods I served as an occupational health nurse in one of the largest beef slaughter and production plants in the United States. Here I gained valuable experience dealing with consistent communication barriers and adjusted to the cultural norms of working with a mostly Muslim and Hispanic population.
Cherokee Mental Health Institute is one of the only remaining state hospitals in Iowa and one of the only inpatient facilities serving children and adolescents. I worked closely with every discipline while employed there and developed a passion for advocating for individuals suffering from various psychiatric disorders.
Iowa Medical and Classification Center serves as the hub for offenders entering into the state corrections system. It is one of the few state prisons in the country with a comprehensive mental health treatment program and houses the most acutely ill and aggressive offenders who require the highest levels of supervision. During my brief time here I gained important communication skills working closely with law enforcement and became more familiar with the particular challenges that come with treating a forensic population.
