Care for mother and newborns after birth providing emotional and physical support
Help establish breastfeeding schedules and methods, bottle feeding, supplementation, and pumping based on maternal preference or medical need
Promote breastfeeding success by offering lactation support and resources to new mothers.
Perform comprehensive assessments on both mother and newborn during each shift, identifying any potential problems early for prompt intervention.
Complete routine tests on newborns for weight checks, bilirubin levels, blood tests, and heart screenings
Assess mother for postpartum complications including monitoring vaginal bleeding, blood pressure, heart rate and temperature; and newborns for signs of illness, changes in behavior, and difficulty breathing.
Educate families on newborn care techniques such as feeding, bathing, diapering, and comforting strategies.
Administer medications accurately and safely according to physician orders throughout the postpartum period.
Prepared patients for discharge by providing thorough education on self-care, infant care, and follow-up appointments.
Maintained accurate documentation of all nursing interventions, assessments, and patient responses during the entire stay in the postpartum unit.
Supported patient autonomy by involving them in decision-making processes regarding their own care and the care of their newborns.
