Summary

My name is Abdullah Kafaji. I Am originally from Iraq. I moved to Houston when I was 11, and I currently live in San Antonio. I am a passionate and enthusiastic individual. I am always looking for ways to improve and be more efficient. I am currently studying neuroscience at The University of Texas at San Antonio, and I aspire to apply to medical school after I graduate. My dream is to work in the medical field to help people and learn in the best possible way that I can. In my college journey, I have had many experiences that showed me how I can improve the field I’m so passionate about. I shadowed at multiple clinics, and I also shadowed and volunteered at multiple hospitals. The biggest revelation for me is when I observed the medical field in my home country, Iraq. I observed a neurology clinic and the GIT (gastrointestinal tract) wing of Marjan hospital in Babylon, the city I was born in. This experience showed me how outdated and dangerous the medical field in Iraq was which triggered this sense of purpose in me that one day I would bring western medical standards to Iraq.

  • In the neuroscience lab I currently study under Professor Apicella. The lab is responsible for conducting fear conditioning research to examine multiple different brain regions such as the amygdala, striatum, and the primary auditory cortex. We conduct research using mice. I am currently involved in helping with parts of the research such as slicing the brain, mounting, imaging, and other procedures such as PCR. The job I have spent the most time doing is imaging. I found imaging to be very important and fascinating because we use different compounds and agents to see the exact pathway of the signals being sent from one region to another. I have also observed many procedures that include patching cells, extracting the brain, injecting, and many more.

  • I have been a photographer for about 2 years now and I have worked with over 100 real estate agents and homeowners. To me, photography is a subtle art that I am proud to be a part of. It includes many aspects outside of taking pictures alone. When I go to a house and I see a family and kids, I start viewing everything in the house differently because everything has a story. To me connecting with the homeowners or the real estate agents is really important because of how much they care about the situation they’re in and it motivates me to do the best job that I can. I also take pictures as a hobby outside of my work . To me, photographers understand that a picture can cause many emotions when being interpreted which relates to what I study as a neuroscience student. Locations and subjects can be captured in many different ways and they can be interpreted in different ways by people.
