Rural Scholars Program

  • Program encourages students from rural areas to go back to rural areas to practice primary care
  • Participated in the Rural Track Summer Community Program (summer between M1 and M2 years), Community Integration Project, and the Longitudinal Integrated Clerkship (LINC) curriculum during my third-year clinical rotations
  • Spent my entire M3 year in the rural community of Hannibal, MO getting to work with outstanding preceptors and patients while rotating through all core clerkships
  • Had a panel of 15 continuity patients that I followed throughout all aspects of their care over the course of the year, allowing me to really get to know these patients
  • Training in a rural setting allowed me to have an increased level of independence and various hands-on experiences
  • Obtained procedural experience including: intubations/airway management in adult and pediatric patients, circumcisions, central lines, laceration repair, delivering babies and assisting on numerous surgical procedures

Advocacy Track Project: Implementation of Special Needs Tracking & Awareness Response System (STARS) Program at University Hospital

Columbia, MO • March 2025 - current 

  • STARS program focuses on improving emergency care for children with medical complexities through the development of individualized emergency care plans written for EMS and ER staff, through patient specific EMS training, and utilization of a database that EMS/911 dispatchers have access to in the case of an emergency
  • Collaborate with EMS director and EM leadership at MU to discuss implementation strategies, create surveys for QI purposes, and create referral form for providers and parents to fill out for patients who would benefit from enrollment
  • Created STARS MU Program logo; working on creating an informational flyer on the program and criteria for enrollment to be administered to MU clinics and hospital
  • Will provide educational sessions on the program to residents and attendings
  • Plan to assess EMS pre- and post-surveys on their comfort level with use of the STARS program database and ability to care for these patients after receiving training
  • Plan to assess how many patients are enrolled in the program within the first 6 months-year and how many times the STARS program is utilized by EMS within that timeframe to help the program qualify for a paid staff member

  • Worked with a medical student, geneticist, and attending physician mentor to gather information on a unique patient presentation that had not yet been reported in medical literature to construct a case presentation/poster to present at the annual Down Syndrome Interest Group Annual Symposium to make other providers aware of this novel finding

  • Title: Resource Initiative for Pediatric Parents
  • Mentor: Dr. Cassidy Leonard-Scott, General Pediatrician
  • Focused on increasing availability of resources to parents of pediatric patients and reducing physician burnout by decreasing call volume for the on-call physician
  • Published an FAQ page for pediatric parents on Hannibal Regional’s website
  • Worked with STL Children’s Hospital to be able to hand out their Kid Care App flyers for parents to use
  • Assessed physician burnout in pediatricians at Hannibal Regional via the Maslach Burnout Inventory
  • Assessed parent satisfaction with the new resources by conducting a pre- and post-survey
