Abigail Shewmaker

As a member of Indiana University’s Retail Studies Organization, I engage with the business of fashion and retail through direct exposure to industry leaders. The club provides opportunities to hear from guest speakers representing top retail corporations, explore trends in merchandising and brand strategy, and connect with peers who share an interest in retail, marketing, and consumer experience. My involvement has strengthened my understanding of the retail landscape, broadened my professional network, and deepened my passion for the intersection of business and creativity in the retail space.

As the Philanthropy Social Media Manager for Gamma Phi Beta, I lead the digital communications and public relations strategy for our chapter’s philanthropic efforts in support of Girls on the Run, a nonprofit that empowers young girls through running-based programs and mentorship. In this role, I manage our philanthropy’s dedicated Instagram account, where I create and curate engaging content, highlight chapter involvement, promote fundraising events, and raise awareness for Girls on the Run's mission.

As a Hostess and Server at Malibu Grill, I contribute to creating an exceptional guest experience through attentive service and seamless restaurant operations. In my role, I greet guests, manage reservations, maintain the dining area, and assist with front-of-house tasks to ensure a smooth and efficient dining experience for all patrons.

As a Website Designer for Shewmaker-Kemper Health Insurance, I developed and maintained the company’s online presence to ensure a seamless and user-friendly experience for clients. My role involved designing intuitive layouts, improving site navigation, and implementing responsive features to enhance accessibility across devices. I collaborated closely with leadership to align the website’s design and functionality with the company’s brand identity, services, and customer needs. Through this work, I strengthened the company’s digital visibility and supported its mission of providing reliable, client-focused health insurance solutions.

As a dedicated member of the Belonging, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (BEDI) committee for Gamma Phi Beta, I actively contribute to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all members. My role focuses on fostering a sense of belonging through initiatives that celebrate diverse perspectives, advocate for equity, and promote an inclusive culture within our sorority.

Collaborating with fellow committee members, I help design and implement programs that educate, empower, and engage members in conversations about the importance of diversity and inclusion. This work involves organizing events, facilitating discussions, and developing resources that aim to cultivate an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

As Social Media Chair for Indiana University Gamma Phi Beta chapter, I spearhead the development and execution of our digital presence across multiple platforms, including Instagram and TikTok. My responsibilities include creating engaging content, crafting visual narratives, and managing campaigns to promote our sisterhood, philanthropy, and events. By leveraging social media trends and analytics, I’ve successfully increased follower engagement and helped boost visibility for recruitment and community outreach efforts.

As a Campus Manager for Fresh Prints, I will be responsible for driving brand awareness and sales within my college campus through creative marketing and strategic outreach. In this commission-based role, I will coordinate with fraternities, sororities, and student organizations to design and produce custom Greek and college apparel, ensuring that each order meets the specific needs and preferences of my clients. I will manage relationships with various student groups, organize on-campus events, and utilize social media to promote products, all while maintaining a strong focus on increasing sales and maximizing commissions. Additionally, I will take on responsibilities such as tracking inventory, meeting deadlines, and ensuring a seamless customer experience, making Fresh Prints the go-to apparel provider for college organizations.

As a Manager at Rita's Italian Ice, I oversee daily operations, ensuring an exceptional customer experience while maintaining high standards of service and quality. My role involves managing a team, coordinating schedules, training staff, and ensuring the smooth execution of all store activities. I am responsible for inventory management, cash handling, and maintaining store cleanliness, while also driving sales and implementing marketing initiatives to promote our products.

As a Class Officer at Westfield High School, I played a key role in organizing and leading student activities, fostering school spirit, and representing my peers. I worked closely with fellow officers and school administration to plan and execute events, manage fundraising initiatives, and ensure effective communication between students, teachers, and parents.

As a Senior Mentor at Westfield High School, I supported incoming freshmen in their transition to high school by providing academic tutoring, guidance on extracurricular involvement, and advice on navigating school life. Through one-on-one and group mentoring, I helped students build confidence, connect with resources, and feel more engaged in both their studies and community. This experience strengthened my leadership, communication, and mentoring skills while allowing me to make a positive impact on younger students’ high school journeys.
