- Volunteer at Saint Peter Community Free Clinic.
Every Thursday from 5 to 8 in the afternoon/evening, I help out the resident doctors from Mayo Eastridge and the volunteer nurses translate their appointments for the patients that come in. I also assist in scheduling and planning out appointments and assessing patients' plan of care when they are not able to inform the doctor/nurse effectively. - Volunteer with the Gusbuddies Program.
Gusbuddies is a program at Gustavus where students spend every Tuesday evening with a child who has developmental delays. I am a first-year coordinator, meaning I help communicate with parents, recruit other student volunteers, and help with the program's budget throughout the year, and set up events. At the same time, I still have a buddy that I spend time with every Tuesday, which is a highlight of my week. :)
Accomplishments
- Graduated with a 4.4 GPA in high school, along with honors roll. I have also been on the dean's list for the first 2 semesters I have been at Gustavus.
Observations
I have observed 2 physicians formally at the moment.
Last year I followed an Emergency Medicine Physician at the Ridgeview ED in Waconia, MN. This was a one-day shadow that lasted 8 hours.
I also observed an internal medicine physician at the Mayo Hospital in Mankato. He was a hospitalist in the various PCU units. He is now on a fellowship in a different state. This experience lasted for 5 days and was 50 hours total with the provider.
These experiences were very motivating and eye opening to see a physician from the other side, not just as a patient. If reference's to either of these physicians is desired, I am more than happy to provide!
