I was training for the Police Olympics so I was attending as many local 10K races. One race in Santa Cruz a elderly man, named Mr. Anderson, dropped to the floor holding his chest. This was in the early 2000 so the heart Defibrillator was new. I was just trained on the defibrillator maybe 3 week prior to the race. I remember there were a couple of firemen from Santa Cruz that also stopped to help the elderly. I said he needs a heart defibrillator. The firemen looked at me like what are you talking about. The race was at a school and I remember seeing a defibrillator hanging in the auditorium wall. I ran back to the school grabbed the defibrillator and applied it to Mr. Anderson, who at the time had stopped breathing and his heart was stopped. I applied the defibrillator and by the second time of applying a electric shock Mr. Anderson came back and was taken to the local hospital.
The following year I was running the same race Mr. Anderson was waiting for me to thank me for saving his life.
