Work History

Vice President of Engineering

Lumiata
Remote, WA
02.2021 - 12.2021
  • Spearheaded migration from product tracking and prioritization in Excel, Google Sheets, Notion.io, Asana and multiple Jira project chaos to a single Product backlog with one derivative Sprint or Kanban board for each team.
  • Cleared out everyone’s schedule by instituting good quality scrum rituals, status and progress automation via Jira dashboards and SDLC procedures for new ideas, prototyping, testing and deployment.
  • Designed, planned and implemented the core of a GitOps deployment system targeting siloed customer environments. This system allowed engineers and data scientists to focus on code and commit quality first with repeatability at its core.
  • Created an infrastructure plan and stories to target spending waste with automation. DevOps team saved nearly 75% of monthly spend by porting to automated provisioning infrastructure and removing manual configurations in the way of automated deployment.

Engineering Manager and Data Architect

HBO Max Data Pipeline
Seattle, WA
11.2018 - 01.2021

In this role I hired and borrowed a collection of teams to migrate data services from various disparate data implementations to a single data pipeline. The new system added privacy mechanism support for CCPA, as well as a full operational and business union of streaming event and batch data. The system is used by product, business, sales, data science, finance and operational systems as the data interface for all data arriving in the HBO Max application and supporting services.

  • Started off as a consultant working with the HBO data architecture
  • Established (designed and implemented) a new message based data architecture using Kafka and Flink for Operational Systems.
  • Created CCPA compliant user anonymized data access layer in Snowflake.
  • Switched roles to engineering manager to manage multiple system and feature migration teams, 14 people in all, in preparation for HBO Max product launch.

Software Architect

Brightcove.com
Seattle, WA
03.2007 - 07.2018

In my 11 years at Brightcove, I transitioned from full stack developer to scalability and backend engineer and finally on to lead architecture and software process for the Business Intelligence, Analytics and Billing teams. In that time.

  • Managed software process and design for customer facing Reporting and Analytics, Business Intelligence, and Billing teams at Brightcove overseeing a 20+ person data and analytics organization.
  • Oversaw multiple system consolidations across datacenter, AWS and Google Cloud architectures
  • Continued to take an individual contributor role throughout this time and still write code across the entire stack every day
  • Built and maintained a bespoke real-time video analytics system that collects information about how engaging videos are and what methods work for driving traffic to them. System supported millions of concurrent streaming viewers and provided real-time insights to over 6 thousand paying video production customers with a library of over 10 million tracked video assets.

Software Engineer

Microsoft
Redmond, WA
10.1998 - 03.2007

I worked on many different teams at Microsoft, beginning on the Windows web team in 1998, MSDN, .Net Evangelism, MSN and finally live.com.

  • live.com: This project affected me more for its culture than any one of the several projects I worked on there. The atmosphere was open and filled with communication and creativity. It is the model that I use as a guide today when fostering team collaboration.
  • channel9.msdn.com: I was one of the co-creators of this online video service. This was an extremely fast paced and exciting time in my career. The group that I was a part of was similar to many incubation type projects that I see today, except that our goals were laid out before us, we were tasked with coming up with both the ideas and execution to make Microsoft’s development community vibrant and engaged.
  • msdn.com: I cut my teeth in the web at MSDN, this was where I learned to push as hard as was necessary to ensure that our customer’s experience was second to none. We built community features right into the documentation and kick started a movement toward a content experience that was at the same time both fresh and alive and comfortable and familiar.
