ALEAH CARLSON

• Conduct ongoing formal and informal assessment of students’ English Language Proficiency Levels.
• Prepare and conduct lessons for all ELL students who qualify for English Learner services in order to meet Minnesota English Language Proficiency Standards and academic content standards.
• Communicate with families regarding students’ school program, collaborating with bilingual staff as appropriate.
• Develop and maintain students’ native language skills while accelerating their English acquisition.
• Support student’s academic language development in content areas, particularly Language Arts.
• Collaborate with school staff and leadership concerning the development, implementation and evaluation of best practices and instructional strategies for ELL students to attain high academic achievement according to District and State Standards.
• Participate in ongoing staff, team and individual professional development.
• Facilitate the process of exiting students from the ELL program.

Provide EL families with the support and resources they need to ensure that their children achieve school success, and to strengthen community engagement to accelerate the academic achievement of English Learners.

Providing guidance and information to EL students and families on:

• How to create an environment of learning at home
• How to communicate effectively with school staff in spite of literacy and language barriers
• How to connect to school and community resources
• How to participate in their children’s learning for greater school success
• How to transition to a new country / state and navigate the school system
• Goals and expectations for MPS students
• Career mentoring (interview/interviewee practice in preparation for prospective internships and jobs)
• Implement student support groups to provide guidance and support to student's specific needs in order to reduce school dropouts and help them stay on track
• PD for staff on how to work with students and families of different cultures and linguistic backgrounds
• Participate in information sessions and seminars for families to increase understanding of EL services and assessments, graduation requirements, college and career readiness, and language/literacy development
