I have extensive experience assisting my grandmother, Angelina Marquez, who is 87 years old. Before relocating to Colorado in February 2023, I provided significant support to her, especially from 2019 onward. In 2019, before I obtained my driver's license, I would accompany my grandmother on her grocery shopping trips and to her medical appointments. Although she was still driving at that time, I would assist by retrieving motorized shopping carts at the grocery store and wheelchairs at the hospital. I also made sure to attend her medical appointments so that I was fully informed about her medications and any necessary refills. In addition to accompanying her to appointments, I also helped my grandmother manage her monthly finances, including paying household and medical bills, and budgeting her expenses. I took responsibility for setting up her medical appointments using the Kaiser Permanente online application and ensured that these appointments were duplicated in my Google calendar for easy tracking. After I obtained my California driver's license in 2021, my role became even more crucial. By this time, my grandmother could no longer drive due to severe pain from cartilage loss in her lower back and knees. She began receiving cortisone shots in her knees every six months, followed three months later by cortisone shots in her lower back. After these treatments, she was unable to walk and required the use of a wheelchair to leave the hospital. From January 2022 to February 2023, I drove my grandmother every week for back massages, and on alternate weeks, I took her to acupuncture or cupping appointments. My experience with my grandmother involved a range of caregiving tasks, from managing her medical and financial needs to providing physical support, ensuring her well-being, and helping her maintain a good quality of life.
As a cadet, I learned about Air Force leadership through mentoring and hands-on learning. I started by learning to follow, then progressed to leading small teams, managing projects, and thinking independently. Additionally, during my time in the Civil Air Patrol, we assisted with public events and reenactments of World War II. Our duties and functions also included search and rescue missions for missing persons in the woods or mountains, where we provided assistance by air and on the ground.
