Alex Twomey

Design Village is an annual event held at Cal Poly SLO a few miles behind campus in Poly Canyon. Each year, first-year architecture studio teams design, fabricate, carry two miles, and sleep two nights in a temporary structure. When I participated in this event, key aspects of our design were cost efficiency, transportability, afterlife, and following the theme of biophilia. As a leader of my team, I practiced many important skills. These include:

• Team building.
• Problem Solving.
• Conflict Resolution.
• Time Management.
• Organization of project parts.
• Delegation of tasks.

• Developed people skills.
• Handled customers efficiently and with kindness.
• Quickly learned how to operate several machines and processes that I was previously unfamiliar with.
• Trained new team members with positive reinforcement and respectful, encouraging coaching.
