  • All of the duties from my previous position listed below, now with more independence and responsibility. The assumption of Saturday or Sundays working alone at the facility and on-call response. As well as starting some Collateral Duty Safety Officer responsibilities: the inspection of emergency eyewash stations, fire extinguishers, and chemical storage units
  • Independent processing, recording and analysis of harvest evaluation for the broodstock breeding program, as well as research/study samples for color, fat content, and fat type operating specialized lab equipment, and maintaining the instruments to assist in the research process. Assisting with other studies and programs
  • Aided in development of emergency power outage and generator failure protocols and deployment of emergency response equipment to the appropriate parts of the facility for each system
  • On a career track for GS 5-7 Biological Science Technician before relocation.
  • Received a $500 USDA Achievement Award for personal effort that contributes to the efficiency, economy, and improvement of Government operations

  • General animal husbandry/feeding and care of Atlantic salmon (as well as Arctic charr and Lump fish) in all life stages, cleaning fish tanks, systems and rooms, keeping daily recordings of fish activities/behavior according to daily routine and procedure
  • Problem solving and adaptation of the daily responsibilities as other tasks or issues come up working in the lab, main facility, out buildings, greenhouses and field
  • Preparation and maintenance of chemicals, solutions and reagents as well as their proper disposal, including biological waste
  • Pit tagging and vaccinating fish, smolting, spawning, and moving fish to their appropriate tanks, system maintenance, well repair, collection of tissue/organ/blood samples, recording data from specialized instrumentation
  • Use, maintenance, and repair of common and advanced laboratory equipment, scientific software packages on laboratory computers
  • Record keeping, summarization, and recognition of patterns in experimental data
  • Assisting in research and lab analysis: annual harvest evaluation, industry fatty acid content analysis, sea lice collection/trials/dissection microscope counting, cataracts screening/lens sampling, astaxanthin digestibility, feed studies
