  • The Honors Student Engagement Council is a method of ensuring students from each of our honor programs that represent all nine of UT’s academic colleges: Haslam Scholars, Chancellor’s Honors, Leadership, and 1794 Scholars are accurately represented. I am on the diversity team, and to ensure minority students in our various programs feel included, we host events and little gatherings in collaboration with multicultural organizations on campus to explore various ideas, perspectives, and stories.

  • The objective of African Student Association is to foster and maintain the spirit of solidarity among African student at the University of Tennessee and surrounding institutions. As vice president, I worked to promote African culture and better understanding among African Americans and other nationalities.
  • In my role, I assumed duties of the president when necessary. Assisted the president in coordinating activities, organized the annual ASA retreat, worked with the secretary in providing all paperwork for meetings, insured tasks were assigned to each executive from the list of responsibilities given by the president by the conclusion of each executive meeting, and supported other executive positions. I essentially provided assistance for the smooth running of the organization, as need be.

  • National Society of Black Women in Medicine is a multi-disciplined organization that works to increase the recruitment and retention of Black women pursuing broad careers in medicine, while simultaneously promoting the advancement of those already established in these fields. Their vision includes being committed to supporting and advocating for future healthcare professionals and scientists in efforts to combat educational and professional racial inequities by promoting attainability through educational resources, unity, and mentorship.
  • As president, I had authority to act with consent of the executive board in the name of NSBWM, and all matters of record, which fall in the scope of the Board as expressed or implied in the constitution. I took primary responsibility for the implementation of programs approved by the board members. Facilitated meetings of the executive board, served as an authorized signer on all financial accounts and transactions, and acted as the overseer of all operations executed by the organization. I took the initiative to implement NSBWM at my institution because I saw the need for minority enhancement for women of color interested in healthcare careers.

  • As an undergraduate research assistant for the department of nutrition, I worked in assistant professor Dr. Bettaieb’s lab. The lab’s research encompassed genetics, nutrition, metabolism and cardiovascular diseases. The primary focus of my research was the role of the Smad/IGF signaling pathway on prostate cancer progression and therapy resistance. Research tasks of mine included identifying the outcomes of genetic modulation of components of this pathway on the onset and progression of prostate cancer, outcomes of targeting this pathway for the treatment of prostate cancer using pharmacological approaches, outcomes of clinical trials targeting this pathway in humans, and laying together future directions for this type of cancer.

  • I worked as a scribe in the emergency department at Ascension St. Thomas Rutherford. I was responsible for all the documentation throughout the patient encounter, from the initial exam to final disposition. I accompanied physicians to each patient encounter, charting through the questions they asked in the patient’s room. Throughout my shift, I kept patients’ charts updated as lab and radiology reports returned, while providing timely documentation of calls/consults and revisits with the patients.

  • This was a large NIH-funded randomized clinical trial of a text-message delivered counseling program for young adult cannabis users. This research was done at the University of Tennessee Knoxville through the College of Social Work. I assisted in recruiting, enrolling, and following up with participants in the study. I attended lab meetings with staff and with cross-site researchers involved in the project and learned clinical research procedures
