For the last 3 years that I have been pursuing my bachelor’s degree, I have had no idea of what I wanted to focus on career wise. Psychology is such a broad field it was hard to narrow it down. After countless hours of researching as well as meeting with many academic and career advisers, I had no intention or motivation to continue school after my Bachelor’s. I had no intention or motivation of going to graduate school until I started my current job, that is. Working in crisis stabilization has truly changed my life. I have a completely new understanding of humanity, community, and the social work field. There is something about working with clients who are in their most desperate time for support that fulfils something in me. Being that support and the only thing stable in their day to day lives makes me feel like I finally found my purpose. Whether that be talking about their day, listening to their problems, referring or linking them to resources to get them back out into the world, or just being a blockage from them and the criminal justice system, working in crisis stabilization never fails to be something I look forward to daily. I am finally putting my passion for helping and empowering others to use and I want it to be in use for the rest of my life. This job opportunity has allowed me to enhance my skills in effective communication, active listening, and resolving conflict in a timely manner. As for my academics, I have been able to use my psychology knowledge to better assist clients and make effective decisions. My diligence can be displayed through my transcripts and academic accomplishments which include making the dean’s or president’s list every semester of undergrad, expected earning of the summa cum laude honor, and graduating with my bachelor’s a year earlier than anticipated.
