accomplishments

While employed at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital I was awarded Healthy Driven Hero of The Year for my part in caring for a sexual assault patient in which the assailant was captured. I was honored for my skills in collecting forensic evidence which involves building trust with the victim, displaying true compassion and remaining unbiased while completing the examination and evidence collection. It may take several hours to complete a sexual assault evidence collection kit. The process is tedious, delicate, and very personal. From beginning to end the nurse examiner must build and maintain rapport with the victim to ensure comfortability and cooperation in a judgement free environment. Not only is the nurse examiner collecting DNA, which can be invasive physically and emotionally for the victim; but also collecting the victim's story, their experience, and timeline of events.

Compassion along with building and maintaining trust are imperative. Two years later I testified in court as an expert witness; the assailant was found guilty and sentenced to 65 years in prison.
