Times Union Nurse of the Year 2021 with recommendation from a former patient I took care of in the Emergency Room
“On one of the darkest days of my life I entered Samaritan ER looking for help. I was addicted to drugs and I wanted help. This was not the first time I had asked for help but so far it’s been the last. Amanda greeted me in the ER with a smile and compassion. I was starting to withdrawal and my mother was there. She was not being the most supportive. Amanda sat on the bed with me, asked me questions about my past, how I became addicted, why I was addicted and explained to my mother that it wasn’t my fault and right in that moment is where I needed the most support. She reminded me I was worth something and that I could do and be whatever I wanted to be. It was the first time I asked for rehab and didn’t feel invisible. She made me comfortable throughout my stay. She stopped in constantly before my transfer to rehab to reassure me I was doing the right thing. I left for rehab that day with the encouraging words she gave me, as well as my mother’s new found support. I exited rehab and started school. I’m clean now for almost 2 years and her words and encouragement sticks with me to this day. One day I hope to make a difference in someone else’s life as she did mine”. -anonymous
