Amber Lawing

I have been an educator for 15 years, teaching middle school math for 11 years and now in my fourth year of teaching high school math. During my career, I have taught students in grades 7 through 11, and I hold certifications in 6 to 12 Mathematics and 6 to 9 Science. I am organized and self-motivated, but more importantly, I value the relationships that make teaching meaningful. I believe students learn best when they feel supported, challenged, and connected, and I strive to create a classroom where they see their own potential. Just as I push my students to grow, I also work to build strong school communities where teachers and staff can lean on one another and celebrate the work we do together.

• Completed Leading Edge Crucial Conversations year-long professional development program, including portfolio work, and received certificate of completion (2025).
• Earned National Board Certification in Mathematics (2024).
• Named McDowell County Teacher of the Year (2025 to 2026).

Leadership & Service

• County Teacher of the Year (2025) – Deliver monthly presentations to the McDowell County School Board to highlight and celebrate educators.
• County Lead Teacher, assigned to McDowell Early College (2020–Present) – Provide instructional leadership and mentoring for colleagues at both the school and district level.
• Math Department PLC Lead, McDowell Early College – Facilitate bi-weekly professional learning community meetings to review pacing, address student needs, and support instructional alignment across Math 1, Math 2, and Math 3.
• Member, School Improvement Team (SIT) – Partner with staff to set goals and guide continuous school growth.
• Member, County-wide MTSS Team – Collaborate on district initiatives to support student achievement and interventions.
• Member, County Honors Committee – Contribute to curriculum and instructional decisions for advanced learners.
