As a Research Protections Coordinator I specialize in applying data analysis and key performance indicators to support evaluations and gap assessments, ensuring regulatory compliance and operational efficiency in alignment with institutional and federal policies. Analyze and identify risks and vulnerabilities. Quantify risks using metrics and create or update processes and policies to mitigate risks and vulnerabilities (Risk Mitigation). This methodology is not limited to the Research Security unit, and may expand to working groups across the University. Threats = Risk x Vulnerability
Review, and update quarterly risk assessment report. Matrix identifies the probability that a risk will become a reality and the impact of a single occurrence.
Create and review data regarding controlled projects. Monitor controlled projects and personnel listed and compare to non-controlled research projects. Fiscal Year 2024 research expenditures were $158 million.
Collaborate across the University to provide content knowledge, draft and redline for multiple UTEP Handbook Operating Procedures (Research Integrity Policy, Compliance with U.S. Export Control Regulations, International Shipping, and Visiting Scholar).
Technical collaboration with IT and Data support units to ensure data integrity through reporting mechanisms.
Review Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Department of Treasury (OFAC), Department of Commerce (DOC) and Department of State (DOS) for changes to policy, regulations, laws and executive orders.
Actively engage with faculty and staff in outreach efforts to maintain compliance with federal agencies such as: National Science Foundation (NSF), National Institute of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and others.
Monitor, review and assist 700 faculty and staff identified as “Researcher” to complete compliance “requests”, “disclosures”, “no activity” required reporting for UT Systems Conflict of Interest annual reporting.
Review, allegations of research misconduct and Undue Foreign Influence investigations. Complete a preliminary assessment report provided to the Vice President of Research. Continue to work under the Research Integrity Officer or Undue Foreign Influence investigator as needed for inquiries and investigations and reporting to agencies such as Health and Human Services (HHS).
Train all users at UTEP who have access to Visual Compliance (screening tool). This includes individuals in Research and Innovation, Human Resources, Purchasing, Disbursement Services and Information Security.
Complete, review and audit Visual Compliance (screening tool) to ensure departments such as human resources, purchasing, disbursement services do not engage in transactions or services with persons or entities on a debarred, sanctioned, SDN, Non-SDN list and to remain compliant with Export Control regulations, federal and state regulations.
Access PeopleSoft for queries relating to compliance and research security
Process faculty and staff international travel requests (export certification).

Act as liaison between academic faculty, administrative staff, and students in relation to utilizing the testing center at CASS.
