I believe that teaching and specifically design education should be focused on the student experience. Intrinsic motivation is a fundamental factor for learning design and maker skills, which is why I strive to create projects where students can mirror themselves, develop empathy, understand equity, celebrate diversity, and exude inclusivity. In my classroom, there are no "correct" answers or paths, and mistakes are not only encouraged and embraced but celebrated as a necessary part of innovation. It is my responsibility as a teacher to foster a safe learning environment where students are able to build a foundation of problem-solving skills such as flexibility of thought and resilience that allow them to persevere through and creatively navigate challenges in their everyday lives. When students leave my class, I hope that they understand how to be empathetic learners who approach problems with a desire to understand and help others.
I derive my leadership style from the principles of human-centered design. Intrinsic to both of these philosophies is empathy, and a focus on not just the results but the experience of those involved. I believe that a leader’s role is to drive engagement and foster a collaborative atmosphere. In other words, in a successful team, a leader's job is to listen, synthesize ideas, and find connections.
