  • IU Health Methodist is a level 1 Trauma Center with the highest volumes of trauma patients rolling through their doors. The main OR is a 35-bed operating room with a trauma room, emergency craniotomy room, and emergency vascular room ready to operate within 5 minutes.
  • It was my responsibility in the evening/night to set up and staff these rooms. During these surgeries I was one of several responsible for operating the rapid infuser, cell saver, argon beam, and code cart. One of my primary responsibilities were assisting anesthesia with rapid sequence intubation and central line placement.
  • Coordination of the operating room is critical to my responsibility.

  • Eskenazi Hospital is a Trauma 1 hospital and a leader in trauma in Indiana. As a resource nurse I covered both the main OR and SICU.
  • My responsibilities in the OR were covering trauma when it was my rotation and providing lunches.
  • Assisting anesthesia residents with intubation and emergence.
  • Positioning, prepping, and draping of the anesthetized patient and ensuring their safety while they were unable to.
  • In SICU receiving fresh trauma patients with open abdomens and the rapid infuser still attached as well as post-craniotomy patients.

  • St. Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital is a 74-bed short- and long-term acute care hospital for patients with multiple organ dysfunction (MODS), extensive wounds, and respiratory failure. St. Vincent Seton also has a 6-bed ICU for intubated and hemodynamically unstable patients.
  • As a nurse at Seton, we were all required to extensively know and understand wound management from stages I-unstageable wounds.
  • We were also required to intimately understand ventilator management and troubleshooting.
