My 17 years at the State Journal Register taught me customer service, working with different office programs, the latest being Google Drive, which I continue to use in my personal life. While at the SJ-R, I also handles incoming and outgoing mail, handles accounts payable and receivable for both circulation and advertising. I covered as switchboard operator and handled payments from walk in customers. I directed customers, both in person and by phone, to the correct department/person they needed to speak with. I was permanently "layed off" in 2017 to to cuts in the industry.
I then worked as a personal assistant for a young man who had severe physical disabilities. I was responsible for making sure his meds were taken, getting him changed, dressed and out of bed; fixing his breakfast and lunch and keeping him clean throughout the day.
After that is when I joined the school district.
I have also volunteered as an Approved Humane Investigator with Illinois Humane for 15 years. I've prepared detailed reports that have been sent to the State's Attorney office for possible prosecution due to violations of the Humane Care for Animals Act. I work closely with SCAC in these cases at times so I understand the importance of working together.
During my time with Dist 186, I've had to be CPI certified and just finished my 2024 - 2025 certification. Thankfully, the times I've had to restrain have been few. I'm familiar with the struggles that kids go through albeit home, school or social. I developed very good relationships with students which allowed me to help via teacher or social worker to make sure students get the resources they need, even if it's just ears to listen and unload on.
