  • I am responsible for planning, directing and administering the overall security operations of the institution
  • I supervise and direct the work of subordinate staff
  • I issue directives, periodic memoranda, and other information to subordinate personnel
  • I make frequent inspections of all units to evaluate efficiency and operations and conduct regular staff meetings to review security operations, explain policies and procedures or discuss security matters
  • I am also responsible for maintaining cooperative working relationships with other law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance by contractual agencies with departmental rules and regulations
  • I serve as a member of the institution's management staff and formulate institutional policies and procedures while serving as a duty officer on a rotating basis with responsibilities for the institution's management
  • I interview inmates regarding work assignments, personnel problems, and other issues
  • I also counsel staff members on corrective discipline procedures
  • I establish policies and procedures and direct staff in search of contraband and other materials, as well as direct riot control activities, correctional emergency response operations, and manhunts in the event of escapes
  • Finally, in their absence, I act in the capacity of the warden or deputy warden and may be in charge of the facility after regular business hours.
