
Born and raised Californian artist, Anika Phillips is on a quest for innovative sculpting communities who desire to push the limits of ceramics in a progressive direction like she does. To a life living on the road, while obtaining a fulfilling art practice has captured a restless appetite for experimentation with abstract shapes throughout a non-subjective process she admits through her work. Contemporary ceramics plays an enormous theme in Phillips' creative endeavors, making sculpture an exhilarating experience with endless ideas and possibilities.
Communal woodfiring gathering for local ceramicists right outside the city of Taos, NM. All participants alternate in different task to prep and unload the kiln. Cutting and organizing various types of wood. Grinding kiln shelves and bricks. Preparing wodding for pieces. Assembling and mixing multiple glazes. Loading and unloading kiln. Stoking wood inside the kiln. Temperature monitoring. Each person everyday taking a 6 hour shift for 5-7 days to stoke the kiln.

A workshop on Raku firing with various types of glazes and bigger pieces. All pieces I took out of the kiln and thrown into a newspaper trash can then covered. Some were sprayed with alcohol for a copper matte finish, while others we left in the trash can until completely cool before removal.
A 6 week workshop exploring in different surface design and decorating techniques including; stamping, sgraffito, tissue transers, and mono-printing. Also exploring different glaze and overglaze teqniques: wax/tape/latex resist, lusters and decals.
A course on organic Raku firing. Going over 3 different techniques, Horse hair, Obvara, and Foil sagger. We got to conduct at least 2-3 pieces per firing technique, and shown her process into constructing her own kiln she resourced herself.
A Japanese sculptural artist, Miwa Neishi, visiting from New York City, guest featuring at Sooki Studios in Los Angeles to share her own personal techniques for handbuilding and process into homemade stamps from clay.
