Registered Nurse

Lee Health
08.1995 - 07.2020
  • When I first got this job I was an LPN. I was working on the Rehabilitation floor, mainly assisting the RN in taking care of spinal cord injury patients and traumatic head injury patients. We also got some post surgical hip and knee replacements as well as CVA's. It was here I learned to be a nurse. On this floor you were part of a team. These patients were medically stable enough to be discharged but not physically or mentally ready to go home. We had a wide variety of tasks we were expected to carry out.
  • We did med passes, assessments, re-assessments, treatments, got patients up and ready for therapy, communications with the PA or MD, etc. No doubt I learned a lot.
  • Once I graduated from RN school, I entered the ER internship program. I was hired to work at Healthpark hospital. The program lasted six months long but I was working independently in four months. Within two years I became the charge. In this position I was able to make strides in improving wait times for patients. As a team we brainstormed different ideas, trialed them and continued what worked. The team and I were pleased by the progress we were making and were motivated to continue to make improvements. Eventually, I was asked by upper management to apply for a charge nurse position at the trauma center at Lee Memorial.
  • I remained at Lee Memorial ER for the next four years as the charge nurse. As with Healthpark, Lee was also a very busy ER that continued to get busier every year. We had a trauma team and an ER team. We continued to strategize methods for improving efficiency and patient outcomes.
  • I eventually stepped down from my position in the ER and move to the Float pool, aka the Staffing Resource Center. The idea was that I would still remain employed with Lee Healh per diem while I explore travel nursing. In this department, I was floated to any of the ER's or PCU's within all four of the hospitals. Eventually we were also taking care of the ER Hold patients when the hospitals were full. I quickly learned to adapt to all the different floors. I liked the flexibility I had with my schedule. I also liked that I met a lot of different people within the system. I remained in this department for the next ten years.
  • Mentored junior nurses, enhancing team performance and patient outcomes.
  • Led quality improvement initiatives that enhanced patient safety and satisfaction across the organization.
  • Assisted in the training and mentorship of new nursing staff members, contributing to a positive work environment and high-quality patient care.
  • Led teams in driving successful patient outcomes by prioritizing standard of care and best practices.
  • Performed frequent checks on life support equipment and made necessary adjustments to preserve optimal patient conditions.
  • Utilized critical thinking skills to prioritize nursing interventions based on patients'' acuity levels and individual needs.
