Anna-Marie Du Plessis

Horseback riding has been an essential part of my life since I was four years old.

My journey began at Burnside Equestrian Academy, where I competed in several disciplines such as eventing, showjumping, Equitation, working hunter, working rider, and dressage.

I have also done long distance trail riding, which has helped me develop my skills further.

At age 10, I taught horseback riding lessons to a small group of children for about six months. It was an incredible experience to show them how to brush horses, clean hooves, be safe around horses, ride bareback, do small jumps, complete a course, and, most importantly, have fun with the animals.

In 2020, my family and I got in of immigrating to the USA, so I had to sell my beloved pony. Before selling her, my trainer, Linda Squair, and I worked tirelessly to get her in shape and participated in 80cm showjumping competitions so that I could sell her as a pony with jumping experience.

After selling my pony, I continued my riding journey at Burnside Equestrian Academy by assisting my trainer in training some of her young horses. My responsibilities included desensitizing them with the saddle, bridle, and other equipment, working with them in the arena, and introducing them to jumps.

Horseback riding has taught me discipline, perseverance, and patience. It has also given me the opportunity to form strong bonds with animals and people who share the same passion. I am grateful for the experiences I have had and the skills I have developed through horseback riding.

In April 2023, my family and I relocated to a different city in South Africa. Once we settled in, I resumed my horseback riding hobby and started taking lessons from a level four Pat Parelli instructor. I continued taking lessons for eight months until we immigrated to the USA in April 2024. Currently, we are residing in Watford City, North Dakota.
