Emphasis in geriatrics, low vision, and primary care

• Conduct comprehensive and urgent eye examinations for veteran population with high prevalence of ocular and systemic disease
• Provide pre and post-operative care to patients following laser or incisional surgery
• Perform low vision and functional vision examinations in Advanced Low Vision Clinic (ALVC), recommend and trial low vision assistive optical and digital devices, facilitate continued care with orientation and mobility and low vision device specialists, make referrals for inpatient blind rehabilitation programs
• Co-manage patient care with appropriate referrals to primary care, neurology, audiology, oculoplastics, and emergency departments
• Educate and counsel patients about their ocular health status with incorporation of diagnostic imaging and physical resources
• Perform minor surgical procedures including foreign body removal, punctal plug insertion, and eyelash epilation

Presentations:

• Triage and Management of Patients with Ocular Surface Disease - primary care VA physicians and nursing staff
• Purpose and Interpretation of Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Automated Perimetry - eye clinic staff

• Provide end-to-end support for diabetic retinopathy screening program implementation at over 360 sites including Federally Qualified Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics, and international health organizations
• Train medical staff to operate tabletop, handheld, and automated non-mydriatic retinal imaging devices from Canon, Topcon, Centervue, and Optovue
• Support users in secure, web-based submission of diabetic patient encounters containing fundus photographs of sufficient diagnostic quality for remote interpretation by licensed and credentialed optometrists and ophthalmologists
• Provide constructive feedback for fundus photograph quality improvement to photographers undergoing certification
• Create educational, instructional, and promotional materials for system users and healthcare conference attendees
• Participate in research projects involving artificial intelligence, community health, and optometry
• Guide volunteer photographers during diabetic retinopathy screening at health fairs in underserved communities

• Authorize vision insurance, schedule appointments, prepare patient charts, maintain eyewear inventory, dispense and adjust eyeglasses
• Administer pre-examination testing on patients including OptoMap retinal imaging, corneal topography, non-contact tonometry, automated perimetry, autorefraction, Ishihara color vision, and stereo vision
• Train patients to insert and remove soft contact lenses
