As a licensed 100-ton captain, I carry the immense responsibility of ensuring the safety of every passenger and vehicle traveling under my license across Lake Superior. As a captain for the Madeline Island Ferry Line, my duties include safely transporting people, cars, trucks, and equipment throughout the day. I navigate in challenging weather conditions, problem-solve when unexpected issues arise, and address safety concerns or passenger needs with professionalism. This role requires quick decision-making, strong leadership, and the ability to remain calm under pressure while always prioritizing safety.
As the head teacher in the toddler room, I was responsible for the care and supervision of up to 10 children at a time and leading the assistant teacher in the room. My primary responsibility was ensuring that each child’s needs were consistently met – going beyond the bare minimum to provide a safe, nurturing, and engaging environment. In addition to supporting their happiness and well-being, I also planned and led art projects, seasonal-themed activities, and daily Montessori-based play that encouraged growth, creativity, and development.
At the age of 15, I started my first job as a ticket seller at the Madeline Island Ferry Line. My role was to provide excellent customer service to passengers traveling across the ferry to Madeline Island. Beyond selling tickets, I was also responsible for keeping the property tidy and clean, handling and bundling large amounts of money, communicating with the boat crew, collaborating with a team, and much more.
