I love advocating for all students because I know how important that support can be, especially regarding diverse populations. Having access to a good teacher can be life-changing. It was for me. I would be happy to be involved in any of the school and/or institution's Diversity programs, mentoring, or advising because, in mentoring students, I have seen how vital learning and coping skills are to success: education, along with adequate and real support, are the ingredients for success. My journey with diversity began early in my career, particularly in the context of women's success in the sciences. This understanding has grown as I've taught in the diverse and inclusive Bay Area. My mother, one of the first women electricians at Bethlehem Steel Shipyards in San Francisco, and my father, a renowned scholar of Chinese History at Stanford University, instilled in me the importance of academic and trade work as unifying forces. I learned to speak Spanish and traveled extensively in Latin America to expand my cultural awareness. As a teacher, I made it a point to incorporate diverse voices in my coursework, expanding my students' knowledge and connecting with their cultural backgrounds. I also used my influence in hiring to bring more diversity, advocating for women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals. I currently work closely with elderly populations who encounter various forms of dementia, and I utilize my background in psychology and movement to help ease physical pain and bring back a sense of dignity as our elders move through the callous aging process. My passion lies in sharing knowledge with diverse audiences, and I am a dynamic and engaging speaker. I am committed to bringing an awareness of inclusion to my teaching and institutional programs, aiming to foster diversity for our students' best success.
