The ability to think quickly and make difficult decisions is something that I have to experience almost every day in my line of work. Approximately two weeks ago I unloaded a load in Dallas, which is a very slow area and somewhat difficult to get another load and continue moving my truck. I decided to call a load that was taking us to Louisiana and when I was waiting for the rate confirmation to sign it I decided to open my weather application and that's where I realized that there was a storm watch in Louisiana for the next day, I immediately called the broker and I decided to cancel this load, this decision cost me losing money since we had to stay empty until the next day but the results of having delivered a load in Louisiana during a storm watch could have been much worse.
A situation I experienced not long ago was that the broker sent all the details of the cargo, everything seemed normal and in compliance. When we arrived at the loading location, one of the people in charge of putting the load on top of our trailer informed us that the material we would be carrying was a few inches larger than what had been established in the rate confirmation and therefore it would be considered oversize. o I instantly called the broker to tell him that I did not have permits to carry an oversize load and that I needed to cancel, the broker tried to negotiate and offer me more money and that I could avoid the weights stations to avoid an inspection, I decided to continue with my idea of
canceling, I have always preferred to do the right thing even though this means losing money and time. This caused the broker to be angry and that I was already there to just take it but I kept firm on my decision.
The ability to stay calm during an emergency situation is something I have definitely put into practice since becoming an owner operator. Checking my routes and making sure that I am taking the correct one is something that I always have to make sure of, we use a truckers map that always gives us the best travel routes and also alerts about low bridges or places where we cannot enter. A while ago I found myself in an emergency situation because apparently the truckers map had not been updated correctly and it gave me a route where I entered a street where heavy trucks were not allowed, realizing from one of the signs that were on the street, I immediately got very concerned because this can be extremely dangerous, I stayed calm and looked for the closest street that would allow me to make a U-turn to change my route, in situations like these it is very important to stay calm and look for the solution as quickly and efficiently as possible because it can have serious consequences.
