I have worked in the Maritime Industry for thirty years. The first twenty years as Deck Officer onboard Grimaldi Lines, Silversea Cruises (as Ship Security Officer), and Princess Cruises.
For the past ten years I have worked in the Corporate Office of PCL in southern California, serving two years in the Marine Operation Department as a Nautical Manager and eight years as a Maritime Auditor for Carnival Corporation.
Throughout my career I have always operated under the highest possible standards while driven by the pursuit of continuous improvement. During my years as Safety Officer, I was responsible for the maintenance, testing, and certification of the lifesaving appliances and the firefighting equipment. I was also responsible for training the crew regarding their emergency duties. I have been involved in several dry docks and the delivery of three new vessels. During my last year as Safety Officer, I was selected to co-design and lead the first three mentoring programs for deck officers new to the cruise industry. This program was designed to increase new hire retention and has been successful by cutting the deck officer new hire resignation and terminations in half. My exemplary leadership skills demonstrated during the mentor program led to my promotion to Staff Captain and the job offer to work ashore as a Nautical Manager.
My responsibilities as a Nautical Manager included supporting the ships during an emergency when assigned to answer the emergency phone, prior to the establishment of the Fleet Operations Center. I also supported the fleet with weather routing and planning alternative itineraries as needed. I was charged with the responsibility of creating, monitoring, and fine tuning the $3 million USD budget for the entire fleet for the following services: weather monitoring and routing, chart and publication servicing. These job duties required astute problem-solving skills and creative solutions.
As a Maritime Auditor I have partnered with shore side and shipboard management providing hindsight based on my time at sea, insight, and foresight of potential risks. Working onboard the vessels of the nine Operating Lines within Carnival Corporation has afforded me a wide breadth of knowledge and the opportunity to formulate positive working relationships with shore side and shipboard management.
I set myself apart in my department by taking a personal and professional interest in streamlining the auditing process. As such, I researched and created presentations to capture my innovative and progressive ideas. In recognition of my success and positive feedback received, I was promoted to Senior Manager of Maritime Audits.
In 2017 I developed and implemented a remote follow-up visit which ensured 100% coverage, increase of 30%, of the fleet. The savings were 10% of the annual audit travel budget.
My creative and forward-thinking mindset helped me develop a remote internal audit program which after receiving approval by MCA, BMA, Lloyds Register, Panamanian, Italian and Dutch Registry, was successfully run on all the ships for the 18 months COVID-19 operational pause.
During the past year, while still involved with the Internal Audit Program for Carnival Corporation Ships, I also participated in two additional projects: the Self-Assessment and the Return to Service Visits.
With the Self-Assessment project, we gave the shipboard an opportunity to speak-up in regard to the efficiency and the effectiveness of Carnival SMS procedures through a questionnaire. The project proved to be very successful and helped to fine tune many of the procedures and improve compliance.
The Return to Service Visits, helped with bringing vessels up to speed after the prolonged Operational Paused.
My leadership, solutions-based problem-solving abilities, and communication skills, provide outstanding qualities necessary to meet any challenges for this position.
