I spent several hours designing the piece on iPad then once given the ok, I spent about 1 week prepping my studio . Custom steel brackets had to be manufactured inorder to hang the canvas appropriately . Floors and wallls were prepped n covered . The actual painting measures 20”x 25” , And was pained in black and white nova color acrylic paint . It took 14 days of actual paint time . I was aided by my son coatl Mejia and daughter citlamina Mejia. The piece is currently on tour with Pepe Aguilar and his family .
We painted eastern side of handball court at the river front park in Maywood ca. using acrylic paint by nova color , david “thunder” and i designed this piece, along with my two children citlamina mejia and xiucoatl Mejia . We drew from inspiration of the la river and a timeline of sorts. Depicting the different folks whom have dwelled from the beginning of time and through out . With a grandmother praying as the river burst out ward from her belly . River represented by water symbols and carried by water serpent running under the plant life and concrete creations made by man . Tongva elder and child in the river as well as other migrating tribes and current dwellers . Emphasis on the children that play amongst the life that surrounds the river .
We were tasked with painting a 10”x30” drywall surface. I was given free range with design so long as it pertained to food . I started with sketching hands stemming coming from the sky of a grandmother figure. Drawing then grinding corn on a traditional stone metate. From the belly of the metate I drew a turquoise serpent representing the fire and acting as a vessel for the four shades of corn(blue, red, white , gold). We then added an ochre back ground with a gradual fade towards the head of serpent . Within the ochre background we have adde several traditional forty’s and ancient depictions of our ancestors utilizing the corn in different capacities.
We designed and painted a serpent carrying children dressed as jaguars dancing and playing . This was a project funded by the DA in Pomona to cover concrete parking block walls during the Covid shut down .
