Micro Plastic collections and research in North Georgia Creeks Winter 2022 –Winter 2023 Life Sciences Department (DSC), Dr. Daniel Gaillard and Dr. Eric Crisp Dalton, GA
• Collect water and soil samples, run samples, count microplastics and record data, create new methods when problems arise in research.
• Work alongside faculty to conduct academic research through collection, analysis and interpreting data
• Our findings show that there is a substantial number of micro-plastics in the water and soil samples of North Georgia creeks
• Currently we can quantify at least twenty micro-plastics per creek sample
• Proficiency with lab equipment and techniques using Ultraviolet Visualization, Centrifugal machine, FTIR machine, Microscopes, and vacuum apparatus
• Work on creating a method for polymer density separation with microplastics in sediments including formulating and experimenting with different density-based solutions
• Attended SERMACS October 25-28, 2023, in Durham, NC to present our research
