Tasks Conducted:

  • Conducted archival research in Harper’s Weekly (1862–1876) to identify references to Black motherhood, family life, and domestic practices.
  • Collected and organized primary sources by capturing, cataloging, and annotating relevant articles, images, and advertisements.
  • Documented findings with detailed citations, descriptive summaries, and thematic tags to support historical analysis.
  • Presented findings at Research Symposium

Honor Thesis: “The Impact of Social and Economic Barriers on the Oral Health of African Americans in the Mid-Twentieth Century Urban North”

Fall Semester 2025 (Current)

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine how social and economic barriers shaped access to dental care for African Americans in the urban North during the 1950s–1960s and to analyze the lasting effects of those barriers on oral health disparities. By uncovering the historical roots of inequity, this project highlights how systemic discrimination continues to influence modern healthcare outcomes.

Tasks Conducted:

  • Collect and review primary/secondary sources on oral health, race, and medicine.
  • Research the NDA, ADA, and historical barriers to healthcare access.
  • Analyze archival materials (e.g., Happy Teeth, Happy Smile).
  • Compile an annotated bibliography of 15–20 sources.
  • Synthesize findings into themes and draft outlines.
  • Write, edit, and refine thesis chapters using historical/public health evidence.
  • Submit outlines and drafts for committee feedback.
  • Revise and prepare final written thesis.
  • Maintain organized source documentation.
  • Prepare for and complete oral defense.
  • Manage project progress through regular meetings with thesis director/committee.

NCUIRE: “Belonging, Place, and Purpose: Voices from the West Valley’s ASU Campus”

Fall Semester 2025 (Current)

Purpose: The purpose is to document and highlight the perspectives of SHARCS faculty through oral history. By collecting and sharing these narratives, the project aims to introduce prospective students and a wider audience to Humanities faculty, while also giving students hands-on experience in oral history methods, best practices, and ethical considerations.

Tasks Conducted:

  • Reviewing readings, PowerPoints, and films to gain an introduction to oral history, its principles, and ethical issues.
  • Receiving hands-on training in oral history methods, including creating interview guides, informed consent forms, and understanding technical aspects of data collection.
  • Learning how to videotape interviews, transcribe oral histories, and edit video content using Adobe Premiere.
  • Conducting pilot interviews to practice interview skills and refine techniques.
  • Interviewing six SHARCS faculty members with a focus on the project’s core themes of belonging, place, and purpose.
  • Editing recorded interviews and creating a polished 10–15 minute video presentation that highlights faculty voices and connects to the project’s themes.
