NCUIRE: “Black Motherhood During the Emancipation Era”

Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine how Black motherhood and family life were represented in Harper’s Weekly during the emancipation period (1862–1876) in order to uncover both explicit and implicit depictions of Black women’s maternal practices, child-rearing, and domestic labor.

Honor Thesis: “The Impact of Social and Economic Barriers on the Oral Health of African Americans in the Mid-Twentieth Century Urban North”
Fall Semester 2025 (Current)
Purpose: The purpose of this research is to examine how social and economic barriers shaped access to dental care for African Americans in the urban North during the 1950s–1960s and to analyze the lasting effects of those barriers on oral health disparities. By uncovering the historical roots of inequity, this project highlights how systemic discrimination continues to influence modern healthcare outcomes.
