  • Conducted lectures and demonstrations to introduce new topics or concepts. Made sure that lectures developed critical thinking skills. Made sure to develop not only critical thinking skills, but students were asked to write essays to further their writing skills. Students were also required to form a small group and make an in-class presentation.
  • I would also provide the students with in-class PowerPoint presentations, which consisted of short films, graphs, charts, and maps that allowed for audio and visual learning.

Skills

  • Educational technology

Started using PowerPoint during lectures from 1996 to 2019

While these presentations started in a simple fashion, every year I was able to add videos

charts, maps, and audio

  • Critical thinking,
  • Our institution was highly dedicated to developing students' critical thinking skills Our department worked on developing special assignments that deal with developing student critical thinking skills
  • Lecture and delivery
  • Every year, our administration would ask us to look at our student evaluations and see if there were any things we could work on to make us more effective instructors, and my evaluations were almost always positive, while the PowerPoint presentations received high marks While teaching at SW, I was nominated 9 times for Who's Who Among American Teachers
  • Public speaking

In 2023 and 2024, I was called upon by the Sons of the American Revolution to make

Presentations to the local San Antonio SAR The Daughters of the Republic of Texas

Also asked me to make a presentation on the Battle of San Jacinto, which took place

In front of the Alamo

  • Cultural awareness:
  • While lecturing in Eagle Pass, Texas, from 1995 to 2014, my students were 98% of Hispanic ancestry I found it very fulfilling as a Hispanic myself to make sure that my students no matter their origins were getting the very best from me every day When I had a bad lecture, I would come in the next day and apologize and ask if they had any questions from the last meeting

Student data analysis

When the Southern Association of Colleges came to our campus around 2008, it seemed like everything changed From that day on, our goal was to improve our institution through data and student outcomes We constantly took it upon ourselves to improve ourselves as educators, and in return, saw some positive outcomes for our students and our institution

  • Student retention

As an instructor, I wanted to make sure that all my students had an opportunity to succeed I took my student evaluations seriously for i knew that sometimes it could be the instructor who might be to blame for student success This is one of the reasons I created the PowerPoint presentations, so as to support my lectures by offering my students, who might be more visual learners, an opportunity to actually get reinforced with what I had just covered in class

Accomplishments

  • Was awarded with Faculty of the Year award in 1998 for teaching excellence at SWTC.
  • Was nominated 9 times to Who's Who Among AMerican teachers.
