Study Abroad Internship: Field Tropics In Conservation Biology - Madagascar

  • Began with one week of online orientation that lead to four weeks living along side scientists and scholars at the Centre ValBio research station in Ranomafana National Parks (RNP). Concluded with two research projects on biodiversity conservation presented at the Université d'Antananarivo.
  • Accessing biodiversity with exposure techniques, behavioral sampling of non-human primates, mist netting of understory birds, stream ecology assessments, botanical sampling methods, pitfall trapping of invertebrates, small mammal trapping and herpetological assessments.
  • Cultural expeditions in the capital, Antananarivo with cross country treks completing comparative ecosystem excursions through rainforest, dry tropical deciduous forests, spiny deserts, mangrove swamps and coral reefs.
  • Formal classes in Malagasy presented by researchers at Centre ValBio in history, culture and language. Outings were held in traditional classrooms, to the heart of the forest with local authorities, community and school groups with the participation variety of cultural activities within tractional villages and RNP practices.
