The GROW Model, is a model I use in coaching my life and my career. This GROW model serves as my structured framework to help me gain clarity about my own goal, understand my current reality, brainstorm options and commit to a plan of action.
G stands for Goal
- What do I want?
I want knowledge, I want higher qualifications. Precisely speaking, I want to pursue and achieve in the "highest" education and obtain greater knowledge in the Surveying field. It opens up opportunities, allows me to learn new things and gives me a better chance in achieving goals in life / career. Knowledge is boundless and there is no inherent limit to what we can know in life. As long as we are willing to learn, there are always going to be things waiting for you to acquire the knowledge of.
R stands for Reality
- Where am I (right) now?
I am just starting out in the new industry with a diploma as my only qualification. The road ahead of me is going to be a long journey towards my goal.
O stands for Option
- What could I do?
I am pretty one-track-minded and straightforward thinking. Henceforth, securing employment in my chosen field, i.e. Surveying is my only option. In my book, obtaining a job in one's chosen field is one of the most effective way in learning and growing in one's career. It gives me exposure to the industry dynamics, the real-world application that can not be replicated in classroom setting. It gives me access to feedback and mentorship, valuable guidance and insights from experienced colleagues; so that I could improve and refine my skills. It allows me to connect and build professional networks with mentors, colleagues and industry experts, which opens up opportunities for collaboration and career advancement. All of which contributes to my growth and development in my career, i.e. my goal.
W stands for Will
- What will I do?
Commitment to action. The determination and commitment in me to actively pursuing job opportunities, pursuing continuous education, networking, and applying for positions will not lose its momentum.
Persistence and resilience, no matter the challenges, the obstacles, the outcome, and the setbacks en route towards my goal.
Accountability. Delivering on the commitments I have set for myself. Holding accountability for progress, including setting deadlines, tracking personal performance, and regularly evaluating and adjusting strategies based on results. Contrarily, acknowledging and taking ownership of my mistakes and implementing measures to prevent similar issues from reoccurring. Holding accountability fosters my reflection on myself.
Last but not least, celebrating progress. Acknowledge and celebrate small victories along the way to "success" helps me reinforce motivation and momentum.
