Starting to work at refineries building scaffolds at the age of 18 shows how much of a hard worker I am. The dedication I’ve shown by working in a physically demanding job and then pursing further education at night highlights my strong work ethic and determination to succeed. Transitioning from full-time work to taking night college classes is not easy but definitely shows my adaptability and willingness to learn new things.
When constructing and assembling a scaffold, I would start by planning and measuring the area where the scaffold will be erected. This involves reading instructions to determine the type of scaffold needed. I then load up the materials like metal pipes, wooden planks, boards and other components to erect the scaffold. These materials are assembled to create a stable framework. Once the framework is ready, you install the scaffold by securely fastening all parts using bolts, clamps, runners , legs and other materials. This step ensures that the scaffold can support the weight of workers and their tools. Safety is a top priority. I need to install guardrails, toe boards, and safety nets to prevent falls. Regular inspections are conducted to check for any wear and tear or structural issues that could compromise safety. This also ensure that the scaffold is level and stable on the ground so the contractors can work safely .
As a scaffold carpenter building scaffolds at refineries, involved more advanced tasks compared to a helper. I was responsible for constructing and dismantling scaffold structures, ensuring they are safe and secure for workers. This includes measuring and cutting materials to the required size, assembling frames, platforms, and guardrails, and ensuring all components are securely fastened. I’d also need to inspect the scaffolds regularly to make sure they meet safety standards and are stable for use. To ensure safety standards, I would regularly inspect the scaffolds, secure all components properly, use the right materials, follow guidelines and regulations, and wear appropriate ppe .
As a scaffold helper my job involved helping building scaffolds. This included tasks like transporting scaffold materials, setting up base using jacks , plywood if needed, braces, and runners , legs and making sure everything is properly fastened and stable. Safety is a big part of the job, so my crew and I would need to follow strict guidelines to prevent accidents and ensure the scaffolds are up to date.
My role as a loader and unloader was to be responsible for handling packages within the UPS facility. It involved loading packages onto delivery trucks in a way that maximizes space and ensures packages are secure for transport. Also including scanning packages, sorting them by destination, and placing them in the correct location on the truck. On the unloader's part was to take packages off the trucks when they arrive at the facility. They scan the packages, sort them according to their next destination, and place them on the appropriate conveyor belts or loading docks for further processing. Both roles required physical stamina as they involve lifting and moving packages, sometimes heavy ones, and working in a fast-paced environment.
