I took all the prerequisites required for the OCTC nursing program, along with taking the SRNA class and passing the Certified Registered Nursing Assistant state exam to become a SRNA. I worked as an SRNA for about a year until I transferred to the job of Nurse Extern while I was working towards my RN degree.
As the title of Nurse Extern I was able to use nursing skills that I had learned in Nursing School at that time. I got to use and skills that I was already checked off on by my instructors under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. While being a Nurse Extern, I have been able to use many of the nursing skills taught in my Nursing courses such as; medication administration (PO, IM, IV, and SUBQ), physical assessment, inserting foley catheters, starting IVs, inserting an NG tube, as well as an OG tube, foley catheter care, wound care and dressing changes, and trach care.
I assisted the nursing staff on my unit to provide high quality care to all patients no matter what. I obtained vital signs and blood sugar checks on patient's. I assisted the patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, ambulation, restroom needs, dressing, and eating. I answered call lights within a timely manner to the best of my ability. I assisted my coworkers, both RNs and other SRNAs with anything they needed help with.
