Summary

As a TTAP member and a Preservationist I trained and work alongside experienced NPS employees to preserve cultural resources and crucial infrastructure. I learned the fundamentals of historic preservation and received on-the-job training in traditional trades, such as masonry, carpentry, and woodworking. I gained practical, hands-on experience and built the foundation for a career in historic preservation.

Maintenance Worker (Historic Preservation

My job as a Preservationist member working with Historical Preservation is to preserve, conserve and protect buildings, objects, landscapes or other artifacts of historical significance to Yosemite National Park. My duties so far have included

• Preservation carpentry in restoring or rehabilitating wooden windows, measuring, cutting, constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood Window components. Example's include Restoration of Tuolumne Lodge windows/screens. Yosemite Valley Residents 43 and 20.

• Strip Lead paints, stains, and/or varnishes off historic interior and exterior surfaces. Example's include Yosemite Valley residents 20 windows, doors and doorframes. Tuolumne Lodge windows and screens.

• Preservation painting including color matching, paint mixing, and application of paints, stains, and varnishes in a neat professional manner. Example's include interior of Valley residents 63, Yosemite Valley Post Office doors and windows.

• Use, Maintain and repair basic painting tools and equipment such as drop cloths, rollers, brushes, paint mixer, scaffolding, ladders, tarps, and putty knives. • Use and maintain carpentry tools including Chop saw, Table saw, Plainer, shaper and bandsaw.

My role as a Maintenace Mechanic in the Historic Preservation crew is to preserve, conserve and protect buildings, objects, landscapes or other artifacts of historical significance to Yosemite National Park. My duties included

  • Condition assessments of wood and stone structures.
  • Preservation carpentry in restoring or rehabilitating wooden structures, measuring, cutting, constructing, installing, repairing, and modifying wood building components. Example's include milling of Yosemite Valley residents 20 interior ceiling, siding, floor and exterior trim elements.
  • Repointing masonry features using traditional tools resulting in a matching Historical finish. Examples include: Leconte Memorial building interior, Yosemite Valley chimneys on residences 19 and 20, Yosemite Valley post office exterior.
  • Repairing and replacing historical windows, consisting of glass cutting, carpentry elements, oils and paint applications or removals, glazing compound applications or removals and window sash repairs. Examples include: Mariposa grove comfort station, Yosemite Valley post office, Yosemite Valley residence 20.
  • Patching and repairing historic roofs consisting of carpentry elements, metal flashing, scaffold erecting, tar paper and wood shingles or shakes. Examples include: Yosemite Valley Residence 19 and 20.
  • Using, maintaining and repairing Masonry equipment such as trowels, masonry chisels, line levels, mortar mixers, brick hammers and rotor hammers. Examples include: ensuring clean tools while working and using tools to mix correct ratios for mortar application on historic structures.
  • Using, maintaining and repairing carpentry hand tools including chisels, planes, axes, drawknives and crosscut saws. Examples include: tool sharpening in the preservation shop, applying linseed oil to tool handles, removing imperfections on tools with shop equipment, seating axe heads and shovel heads. Handle replacement for traditional tools as needed.
  • Completion of multiple BEST preservation workshop training.

  • Preservation carpentry including structural framing, reconstruction of windows and doors, and finish carpentry using a variety of power and hand tools. Examples include: Yosemite Valley residents 20 foundation stabilization, wall frames and rafter replacements, Mariposa Grove cabin Decking repair and replacement.
  • Preservation masonry including chiseling, mortar analysis, mixing and repointing of historic features using hand tools. Examples include: Mariposa Grove cabin chimney restoration.
  • Preservation roofing including repairs to flashing, shingles, and architectural elements while working on scaffolding or in elevated work platforms. Examples include: Yosemite Valley residents 20 rafter, skip sheathing and roof replacement.
  • Preservation painting including color matching, paint mixing, and application of paints, stains, and varnishes. Exsamples include; Tioga gate, Mariposa grove comfort station Windows, Yosemite Valley Residents Windows.

Examples include: Framing for Tuolumne Tent Cabins, Stabilization for the Tuolumne Campground Office, Post replacement on Carpenter Shop in Yosemite History Center, Log chinking at Yosemite History Center.
  • Repointing a variety of masonry features using traditional tools resulting in finishes that matches the historic character. Examples include: Arch Rock CCC guard wall, Wawona CCC Comfort Station, Yosemite Valley chimneys on residences 21, 43, 63.
  • Repairing and replacing historical windows, consisting of glass cutting, carpentry elements, oils and paint applications or removals, glazing compound applications or removals and window sash repairs. Examples include windows on Yosemite Valley Residences 20 and 38.
  • Patching and repairing historic roofs consisting of carpentry elements, metal flashing, scaffold erecting, tar paper and wood shingles or shakes. Examples include: Yosemite Valley Residence 47, 21, 43, and 63.

  • Using and applying latex base paints, oils, stains, varnishes and thinners in a neat, professional manner. Examples include: using paint to restore historic windows, using a pine tar and linseed oil mix to restore the finish on the Tioga gate, painting interior walls to restore original finish, and used linseed oil to restore wood handles on tools.
  • Stripping and removing lead paints, oils, stains, varnishes and thinners in a neat, professional manner. Examples include: stripping the Tioga gate of years of accumulated Penofin. Stripping historic windows of lead paint using lead safe practices in a controlled environment.
