Supervisory Insect Production Worker
ANIMAL AND PLANT HEALTH INSPECTION SERVICE
07.2023 - 08.2025
Manages a multi-sector workforce and a variety of work situations. Knowledgeable and experienced in all steps of the Naval Orangeworm rearing process.
Supervise and assist in the kitchen with the formulation of three different diets: two formulations of the Naval Orangeworm diet and one for Pink Bollworm. I can troubleshoot and maintain the extruder used to cook these diets.
Sanitization is vital in all steps of the rearing process, this involves ensuring the 'clean' rooms are clean by enforcing no cell phones in these rooms and emphasizing the importance of hand washing.
Organization and documentation are also very important in the rearing process, I ensure that the multiple strains of Naval Orangeworm egg pads are cut correctly based on their appropriate grades. In pupation, I certify that the three corresponding rooms are at the correct temperature and maintain a board to inform the team which egg dates needed to be watered and moved. I also review their work and paperwork daily to ensure everything was done correctly.
Developing others is important to me and my team. I provide hands on technical training to new employees as well as provide feedback on their performance and development.
Trained new employees on setting up implants cooling belt and gondolas which are items we use to catch the diet coming from the kitchen and train them on the importance of accurate documentation when writing on insect jars, tray tags and the paperwork that corresponds to them.
In Egg Prep I trained them on how to properly sanitize egg pads, and how to cut and determine the grades for each egg pad. The last thing in egg prep is how to properly sort the egg pads into bags and how to label them. In pupation I train them how each room is set up and how to water trays and jars. We go over the board to show them which egg dates need what done to them and how to check dead larva.
For autoclaving I make each employee read and sign the proper paperwork and do a demonstration of the task. We also go over how to prep racks for the clean trays with the proper disinfectant. In all the departments I show them how to properly clean to avoid contaminating implant and egg prep and minimize pupation with Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt).
Utilized organizational skills to make weekly and advanced schedules to ensure proper coverage in six different departments. This entailed reviewing leave, diet cook schedule and any new experiments. This helps the facility by ensuring we have the proper coverage in each department and backups in each department in the case of someone calling out.
Helped identify existing and any potential problems that might need to be fixed or upgraded. An example of a potential problem is the heating elements in our extruder, which are prone to go out.
Attended weekly supervisor meetings and gave updates on how certain cooks went, where we are on staffing and other projects that might be in the works. I also discussed and collaborated with the management team on important facility situations.
Proficient in interviewing, selecting and onboarding new employees.
Was the hiring manager for Insect Production Worker and worked with Employee Relations.
At the end of the day I check on all the departments to determine to quality of complete work and see if any adjustments are needed for the following days.
Insect Production Worker
ANIMAL AND PLANT HEALTH INSPECTION SERVICE
08.2022 - 07.2023
Prepared and weighed out diet ingredients for three different types of diet for the following days cook.
Operated a large extractor for the establishment of the Naval Orangeworm colony and maintain a Pink Bollworm colony.
Implanted the Naval Orangeworm into their subspecies to start their lifecycle and grow the colony.
Knew the one-month process of the Naval Orangeworm lifecycle that prepares them to go to California and be used for more moth development.
Once they are ready to emerge, I would move them to moth collection and then set them up in boxes attached to a line with a blue light which attracts them into a cooler where they become dormant and easier to handle.
Collected, weighed, and took samples of the moths to be sterilized and to be sent to California, where more field testing is done.
Prepared magazines for the moths to be placed in after being sterilized to be sent out to the fields.
Drove the moths to the airport, where they were then sent to their destination.
Once the samples were taken to Quality Control I observed changes in their lifecycles, viability, and general activity.
In Quality Control I would grade egg pads and place them into the correct grading scale to ensure the egg pad was divided accordingly and placed into the correct container.
Maintained disinfectants to clean and sanitize the appropriate equipment and floors depending on the department I was in.
