Design has always been an integral part of my life. It surrounds us in every aspect of daily living, from the clothes we wear to the cities we inhabit and the objects we use every day. That's what makes it so fascinating. It's the medium I use to bring people's imagination to life, creating something beautiful and tangible.
My passion for art and design began at a young age. I can still recall the day I was six years old, sitting at the kitchen table of my grandparent's house, coloring my favorite Monster Inc. coloring book with brand-new markers. I colored the entire picture pink, without leaving a single white spot. Eager to show off my masterpiece, I ran to my grandma in the living room. She smiled and exclaimed, "Well Anna, that is such a beautiful drawing!" That moment sparked my love for art and design. I wanted to explore, create, and make something of it. Over time, I learned how to color inside the lines, experiment with new supplies, and develop new techniques.
I am grateful for my parents' support as well. As part of a military family, I had the privilege of exploring new environments and trying new things. In each new place we lived, I made sure to join an art club, always eager to learn and improve my skills. I've lived in Georgia, Missouri, Colorado, Texas, Qatar, and South Carolina. In each state, starting from Texas, I was fortunate enough to work with many talented and remarkable artists who were my age. I learned through the eyes of many brilliant teachers, each with a new perspective. My first-ever art piece that got recognized was when I was in second grade. We were asked to create and draw an illustration representing a fire hazard. I decided to draw a kitchen, complete with a stove, fridge, microwave, and sink. I drew a metal fork being heated up in the microwave, and the microwave exploded with fire coming out of it. I turned it in the next day, not expecting much other than a grade. However, when the next few days passed and I didn't get my drawing back, I was disheartened because I wanted to show my mom the work of art I made, which I was very proud of. Something happened the next day though. I was listening to the announcements and heard my name being called, saying that I had won a competition with my fire hazard picture. My teacher came up and congratulated me, saying I was supposed to collect my prize at an event hosted in the fire department station. It was a brand-new white and pink bike with beautiful rainbow streamers on the handles. I couldn't believe it. I was ecstatic. My parents were so proud of me. I even had my picture framed. It was a moment I could never forget.
Fashion design is another form of art that I grew to love. Growing up with a beautiful mother who had an eye for clothing, I would say that's where I get my inspiration from mostly. She always made it look so easy, putting articles of clothing together as we went shopping for new wardrobes. I can say I was one of many little girls who played dress up with her mom's clothes, dresses, and even high heels. I always loved receiving Barbie dolls as gifts as I would change out their clothes from other Barbie dolls and make them look as crazy as possible. You see, when aesthetics and design are applied to apparel, the beauty is enhanced. Dress codes, parties, business meetings, weddings, and other occasions demand changes in clothing. And that's the job I want as a designer: to design the wants and needs of the audience. Another reason why I am grateful for being a military brat is that I got to travel to various places. Even overseas, I got to see the beauty of different environments other than the U.S. You gain perspective through traveling. Sometimes, perspective means taking a step back to move two steps forward. Traveling results in retrospection, and it's comparable to the last step of a product design process. Now that is something surreal that I want to explore.
As I grew older, I began to appreciate the role design plays in our world even more. It's a tool for solving complex problems and improving people's lives. Whether it's designing a more efficient transportation system or creating a user-friendly app, design has the power to make a real impact. Design is more than just a hobby for me; it's a way of life. It's a way to express myself and bring beauty into the world. I believe that with the right vision and creativity, anything is possible. Whether I'm working on a logo for a small business or designing a website for a non-profit organization, I always strive to create something that is not only visually appealing but also meaningful and impactful.
