Work History

Research Volunteer

Northwell Health Neurology Residency
08.2022 - 06.2023
  • Participated in a study comparing the effectiveness of picture food menus versus written food menus in patients admitted to our stroke unit with any form of documented aphasia on admission. We were looking at the percent food eaten on patients' food trays by randomizing patients based on room numbers (even- standard menu, odd- picture menu) into one of the categories. One of the goals of this project was to see if picture menus have made a significant difference in our aphasic patients' dietary intake, in comparison to standard hospital food menus. Worked in conjunction with help from dietary and other staff such as nurses on this project (especially for documenting amount of food eaten and patient/family surveys).

Resident Run Virtual Meet & Greet Session Volunteer

Northwell Health Neurology Residency
10.2022 - 12.2022
  • Ran (along with a co-resident) the Resident Run Virtual Meet & Greet sessions every Thursday on the day prior to the actual interview days for Neurology residency interview candidates to provide them a good understanding of our program and candidly answered any questions candidates may have.

Sepsis Committee member

Peconic Bay Medical Center
08.2020 - 05.2021
  • Sepsis committee team meets monthly to review and improve sepsis metrics, outcomes, and performance improvement initiatives. Compliance of 3 hour serum lactate collection, blood culture collection, antibiotic administration and crystalloid fluid administration data are looked at. Also, compliance of 6 hour vasopressor administration, repeat serum lactate collection and repeat volume status/tissue perfusion data are looked at. The ultimate goal is to make sure our hospitalized patients are provided early diagnostic and therapeutic measures in order to decrease morbidity and mortality rates due to sepsis.

Stroke Quality Improvement Project member

Peconic Bay Medical Center
10.2020 - 04.2021
  • Retrospective data was collected from EMR review of discharge summaries/discharge instructions for between 2/1/2020 and 11/30/2020 for all patients who presented to PBMC with onset of symptoms that suggested CVA or TIA. Patient who were confirmed to have only ischemic strokes were included in the study. All patients have received CT head w/o contrast as baseline imaging and of those, some received CT perfusion (CTP) in addition to CT head w/o contrast. Primary endpoints included patients who were transferred to tertiary care facilities (TCF) and patients who were sent home/rehab. Patient who left the hospital AMA or who expired were excluded from the study as their outcomes were reached before primary endpoints could be met. Patients with CTPs (in addition to CT head) were less likely to be transferred to TCFs than patients with CT head alone. CTPs were more likely to precisely identify patients who needed thrombectomies, and as a result, prevent unnecessary transfer of inappropriate patients.

Volunteer Interviewer

Peconic Bay Med Center Transitional Year Residency
11.2020 - 12.2020
  • I have helped my Transitional Year Residency Program help recruit new candidates for the following year (2021) by interviewing 28 candidates on 2 separate interview dates (half day interview sessions/14 candidates per day). 3 of the 12 candidates who matched were candidates I interviewed with the rest of the committee.

Volunteer/Shadowing

Middletown Medical
05.2020 - 06.2020
  • Worked with Clinical Neurophysiologist and Epileptologist and observed EEGs and EMGs for the diagnosis and treatment of various neurological disorders including Epilepsy, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis and other cerebral/neuromuscular disorders.

Volunteer/Shadowing

Middletown Medical
04.2018 - 05.2018
  • Worked with Clinical Neurophysiologist and Epileptologist and observed EEGs and EMGs for the diagnosis and treatment of various neurological disorders including Epilepsy, Parkinson's, Multiple Sclerosis and other cerebral/neuromuscular disorders.

Mentor for New Transfer Students

American University of Antigua-Peer Mentor Program
01.2017 - 05.2018
  • At AUA College of Medicine, I participated in their Peer Mentor Program and mentored new transfer medical students into the curriculum. These students have come from other medical schools. I taught them proper study methods for various classes and how to overcome other obstacles during medical school successfully.

Volunteer/Shadowing

University Orthopedic Center & Surgery Center
03.2018 - 04.2018
  • Shadowed an Orthopedic Surgeon in his clinic and also saw him perform various orthopedic surgeries in the Surgery Center. I got to see many X-rays and learn from them during his clinic hours.

Student Doctor Volunteer

St George's University School of Medicine - AMSA
01.2014 - 05.2016
  • Attended several One Health One Medicine health fairs in Grenada through American Medical Student Association (AMSA). I have performed numerous free wellness check-ups for locals in the villages. This has involved patient history taking, vision and hearing tests, glucose monitoring, taking blood pressure and reflex testing. I have also participated as a triage student doctor to help ease the process through the various stations for the patients. This has given me a very valuable, hands-on practical experience as a medical student.

Research Fellow at Department of Ophthalmology

University of Pittsburgh Department of Ophthalmology
06.2012 - 08.2013
  • Looked at gene expression involved in human corneal stem cell (HCSC) differentiation. I have looked at the upregulation and downregulation of numerous transcription factors during early HCSC differentiation. It involved culture of corneal stem cells, PCR, transfection of cells with siRNA, and data analysis using Excel. The goal of this lab work was to get a better understanding of corneal stem cell differentiation in order to treat corneal scarring through autologous corneal transplantation.

Hospital Volunteer

Mount Nittany Medical Center
11.2003 - 08.2010
  • Over 700 hours on patient floors, Cardiac Catheterization Lab, Emergency Department, Radiology/Imaging services and Gastroenterology Department. I was directly involved in patient care including patient transport, making beds/restocking linens, serving patients their food, pharmacy tasks, transporting medical records, and answering calls on a personal pager. Also, learned simple medical procedures (suturing, casts) and got a great overview of various medical specialties.

Research Fellow at Neuroscience Lab

Pennsylvania State University
06.2008 - 08.2008
  • Used fruit flies to study the cellular and biochemical nature of neuromodulatory processes that are crucial for learning and memory. Specifically, they studied neuromodulators-dopamine and octamapine. I was assigned the job of determining what locomotor effects chronic alcohol exposure had on fruit flies. I investigated the role of individual dopamine receptor subtypes in ethanol-induced locomotor activity. Through my work and work of graduate students, this research group was able to better understand the mechanisms underlying neural changes in the brain that result from the chronic use of alcohol.
