Additional Information

I was born in Shungnak, Alaska to the late George and Sophie Cleveland I attended high school at the Chemawa Indian School and graduated in 1969. I attended Eastern Washington University upon graduating and completed my AA degree from the U of A Chukchi Community College in Kotzebue, Alaska in 1988. I am fluent in the Inupiaq language both in reading and writing. I have been translating and interpreting for both the US Fish & Wildlife Service and the Alaska Department of Fish & Game during my work tenure with them also translated for NANA Regional Corporation, Maniilaq Association, Alaska Court System, Alaska Federation of Natives, Cook inlet Tribal Center and the Inuit Circumpolar Council,

The experience I have gained throughout the years is that by incorporating our Inupiaq Ilitqusait values in our daily lives, we live better lives and by teaching our youth to succeed in a life of two worlds, cultural and the advent of western society, we ensure the survival of our culture.

I understand the responsibilities of the NANA Elder Advisor and know the importance of being neutral and impartial on issues that require open discussion by the NANA Board and Administration to ensure that the shareholders reap the financial benefits from the corporation. I know most of the people in the NANA region and will help them and NANA build trust. It is an issue that needs attention and my experience will help generate positive results.
