Sports on the Beat

Capstone
01.2025 - 05.2025
  • I covered sports stories for the Haskell Indians Nations University athletics program. I covered the peak of their basketball season, golf, and other things happening in the program.
  • I made many packages covering the Haskell Indian Nations University athletic program. Highlighting action of the story on camera, and using the best of my story telling ability.
  • In the packages I included standup's displaying my creativity to sum up the story. I captured B-roll footage of sporting events using tight, medium, and wide shots. I conducted on-site interviews, and recorded voiceover for video packages.
  • For writing the stories I would include (beginning, middle, end) and crafting compelling ledes to shape the story.
  • For the second half of my capstone within the Lawrence community, I had to research other sports stories, moving beyond event-based reporting to uncover deeper sports narratives.
  • Executed video packages using Adobe Premiere Pro, demonstrating advanced storytelling capabilities for investigative or feature-driven sports content.
  • Applied critical thinking and investigative skills to uncover and report on non-game-related sports developments.
  • I used my angle to express the local sports that were happening.

  • I was a part of the Playmakers Crew that recently won the best student-led broadcast at the Kansas Association of Broadcasters award Ceremony.


  • In our pitch meetings, I informed my producers story ideas for me to talk about on camera.
  • Researched my topic I was going to talk about, and then wrote good scripts for the my weekly sports segments, ensuring accuracy and engaging delivery of breaking news and analysis.
  • Made sure to make video graphics to match the script. I made sure the audience could visualize what I was talking about.
  • Made sure I had a good on camera presence, and breaking down the sport segment I was talking about, and making it clear.
  • I also made some of my content entertaining.

Multi-Media Journalist

KUJH Is the Journalism schools' biggest student led news program.

  • I made packages every other week that covers on campus or local events.
  • In my packages I conducted interviews, wrote scripts, shot video, did voiceover and edited the content to put the story together demonstrating my story telling skills and proving I can be in any type of media room.
  • Contributed to a collaborative newsroom environment, participating in pitch meetings and contributing to story development. I was a part of the blue team.
  • I also did a live shot appearance to display I can memorize a story and use expression.
  • I also did in studio work as a sports anchor to also tell sports stories on camera.

C You in the Major Leagues is a program where mentors seek over high school kids to educate them about the 10 Cs.

  • Almost every Wednesday I drove from Lawrence to Kansas City, Missouri to promote an event they have.
  • Produced compelling promotional video content for weekly high school mentorship events, significantly contributing to program visibility and participant engagement.
  • Marketed the events by making packages of the events that took place. Shot B-roll, conducted on-camera interviews with the guest speakers and mentors, and recording my voiceover to display my narration.
  • Used Adobe Premiere Pro to put the stories together. The B-Roll I used were for viewers to see how it makes an impact on the program and why they should bring their kid to be a part of a program like this.
  • Used some of my work to promote this program, on platforms like Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Helped a lot with marketing the big events such as Top Golf. They do this annually.
  • Feat: I interviewed the founder of the program Dayton Moore, and other local celebrities that are within the program/

  • Helped with pre, mid, and post-game tasks.
  • Assisted with setting up the field and providing the wiring to hook up to technology.
  • Provided scripts, rosters, stats and equipment to crew members such as the producers, broadcasters, and camera crew during the game.
  • Before the game, the mission was to stock their area with snacks, drinks, etc for the crew (directors, control room, producers, broadcasters) to have a great in game experience.
  • I supplied ice for each teams' sidelines for their buckets to fill them so each team can have steadily cold drinks.
  • I had to communicate to deliver everything to the right place, which involved working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Had to break everything down and put everything back where it was supposed to go during post game.
  • I got to build connections with some of the production team to expose me to more jobs like this.

  • I designed graphics to promote sporting events, or news that was happening that week.
  • Designed and produced compelling sports promotional graphics using Canva Pro, aimed at increasing viewership and engagement for various sporting events.
  • I created eye catching graphics for my sports audience and published them to the Instagram.
  • Made sure my posts were along the lines of creativity, and had the ability to produce attention-grabbing digital content.
  • My Instagram has 35 posts and has grown to 140 followers with the use of hashtags on each post.
  • I also did some Man on the Streets to display other people's opinion on a topic.
  • I will continue to improve my editing skills in making graphics, and will use this account to report breaking sports news, sports skits, etc.

Good Morning KU Sports is a student led sports show covering KU and professionals sports.

  • Some shows if I wasn't on camera then I would be the floor director.
  • Directed on-set talent and managed studio flow as Floor Director, ensuring precise execution of cues for people to start talking.
  • Communicated to the technical director and producer that camera shots were focused, and prop placement for live broadcasts.
  • Contributed to pre-production meetings, offering insights from both a talent and production coordination perspective.
  • My contribution as on-air talent, had to due with delivering sports news and commentary with a professional demeanor and engaging personality. Overall keeping the audience update on the latest sports news.

Run It Back is another student led show in the Journalism school.


  • I pitched story ideas in team meetings, so I could tell the story on camera next week.
  • When the story I pitched gets approved I develop research strategies to implement them into the scripts I am writing. I organize the scripts into a beginning - middle - end structure.
  • Make sure the content is eye catching towards viewers. and my on camera presence is firm.
  • I make sure my on camera commentary matches with the graphics I produce. I don't want my audience to look at me the whole time, but the visuals in my story.
  • I also ran the cameras for people who were on air to capture the right shot (if needed), and did the teleprompter if the head teleprompter guy wasn't there.

Play-by-Play/Color Commentator

KJHK Is a student-led radio station program. I was a part of the sports radio.

  • For play-by-play I made my commentary suspenseful. Whether if I was commentating Basketball, or football.
  • I communicated my audience a players in game stats, and their past stats on other games.
  • Made sure to research before the game so I can highlight/focus on a player that's on a hot streak. Inform the listeners a little about the players performance.
  • Make sure I involve entertainment/slogans and being myself.
  • For color commentary I would provide an insightful color analysis, breaking down player performance, team strategies, and game dynamics for the at home listeners.
  • Synthesized complex game data and player statistics into accessible, engaging on-air narratives. I do this to communicate conversation with my broadcast partner , so their would not be any second of mute on our broadcast.

Good Morning Playmakers was a collaboration with Playmakers.


  • I did only in-studio work.
  • I learned how to run camera, so all the sots were in focus and on point so the audience could see the person who was talking.
  • I did the teleprompter, so the reader could tell the audience what they were talking about. I had to make sure the on air talent and I were on the same page so I could match their reading pace.
  • I ran audio some days as well, so I could make sure audio levels were right went the talent was talking, and made sure different video segments had the right audios while people were talking.
