VideoEditor & Colorist

BBC World Service Trust
01.2010 - 02.2013

Job Overview:

As a video editor and colorist, and his exceptional skills and creativity quickly established him as an indispensable senior member of the team. During this period, he made innovative contributions to various projects, leaving a lasting impact on the organization's media development initiatives. The inception of "Bishaash" ( A Pioneering Supernatural Detective Drama) was woven into the fabric of the renowned "BBC Janala Project," forming an integral part of its multi-award-winning endeavour. Beyond its entertainment value, "Bishaash" played a pivotal role in the Mott MacDonald's £50 million nine-year program, targeting the education of some of the poorest people in Bangladesh. Airing weekly on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Television World, the series reached an audience of over 20 million people. As part of the English in Action (EIA) education program, "Bishaash" became a beacon of knowledge, revolutionizing the way English was learned in the country. In the realm of political discourse, he made his mark by making substantial contributions to the highly regarded program, "BBC Bangladesh Sanglap (BBC Dialogue)." Like an orchestrator of meaningful conversations, he played a pivotal role in curating discussions that captivated audiences, leading to substantial viewing figures of 37 million and garnering widespread global acclaim.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Served as one of the key Heads of Department on feature films, overseeing the work of First Assistant Editors, and on larger productions, Second Assistants and Trainees. Understanding the art of storytelling and its impact on the audience was central to my approach in the filmmaking process.
  • Held the crucial responsibility of ensuring the seamless flow of the story from beginning to end. Each shot was meticulously selected and edited, eventually assembling them into a series of scenes that would culminate in the final film. This role demanded a unique blend of creativity, challenge, and fulfillment, as I collaborated closely with the Director to weave the daily rushes into a coherent and captivating whole. Editors, often working long and demanding hours under pressure, are typically employed on a freelance basis by Producers, relying on their reputation and experience. My expertise extended not only to feature films but also encompassed television dramas.
  • Collaborated closely with the Director before the commencement of shooting, strategizing to maximize the potential of the screenplay. On the first day of principal photography, I delved into the cutting room, which was sometimes located on the set itself. There, I meticulously reviewed the previous day's rushes, which had been developed overnight at the Film Lab and meticulously synced-up (ensuring alignment of sound and image) by the Assistant Editor. As an Editor, my focus extended beyond just technical standards; I carefully assessed the emerging sense of the story and the actors' performances. The unique challenge of working with scenes shot out of sequence required me to maintain a profound understanding of how the story unfolded, allowing me to skillfully select the best takes and seamlessly edit them together to create compelling scenes. In certain instances, an improvised line or an actor's interpretation added on-screen magic, inspiring the creation of new and exciting scenes that further enriched the narrative.
  • Throughout the film's shooting phase, I invested countless hours in reworking and piecing together scenes to form a Rough Assembly. The post-production period then involved a collaborative process between the Editor and the Director, meticulously refining the assembly edit into the Director's Cut. The approval of the Producers was sought to achieve picture lock or Fine Cut, marking the final approval of the picture edit by the Director and/or Executive Producer. My role as an Editor extended to supervising subsequent music and track laying, as well as sound mixing.
