Having grown up with AKC-Registered Golden Retrievers in northern Minnesota, I've been a dog lover my whole life. As a baby and toddler, I would 'ride' the backs of my grandparents' golden retrievers, and as a kid, I slept with them. Neechee, the mother, named 'Woman' in Ojibwe, and Equay, the daughter, named 'Equal To' in Ojibwe, had multiple litters, and with 10 cousins, we got creative in naming the pups. We raided the spice rack, so pups were aptly dubbed Paprika, Turmeric, Cumin, Cinnamon, Salt, Pepper, etc. Both dogs lived to 16-1/2, sadly and tragically drowning in a frozen over lake in winter. With 10 cousins, we got creative in naming the pups. Then, at age 10, I rescued my first dog, Lucy, a little black mixed breed puppy. She had been thrown from a car on the interstate in Phoenix, AZ, and nursed her back to health. I devotedly trained her to not be afraid of cars, taught her to sit & stay, socialized her, fed, watered, groomed her, and took her to the Vet. And, most importantly, I LOVED her, as my best furry friend, and she lived for 11 years. As an adult, from 1997 to 2016, I adopted (3) Australian Shepherds, a tri-colored 'uncle' and a 'niece,' and the middle 'child,' a brain-damaged and severely abused red-tri. I LOVED them all, trained, fed, watered, and socialized each. Panda died of a grande mal seizure when he was 5; Cocoa lived to 12-1/2, and Lucy II, lived to 5 days shy of 14. The day after Lucy's passing, I adopted 'Grace Kelly,' a rescue and 'Great Golden,' i.e. a 1/2 Great Pyrenees, 1/2 Golden Retriever, from a kill shelter in Waco, TX. Upon finding her online, she was scheduled to be euthanized...for overcrowding, so it was a crazy logistics coordination to get her safely into a local foster family's arms until I was approved for adoption. I've taught her the (7) commands of Sit, Stay, Down, Come, Off, Heel, No. Prior to COVID-19, we did a lot of volunteering at the dementia and alzheimer's units at retirement communities, socializing autistic kids, helping passengers at DIA overcome fear of flying anxiety and panic attacks. Most importantly, I had a freak accident which has required (9) surgeries over the past (4) years, and Gracie has helped me to rehab from all injuries to return to my active lifestyle!
