This was a very demanding and oftentimes difficult position. The work schedule was seven days on, seven days off. I had my own private quarters. I was responsible for teaching teenage girls how to cook and get along with others, and for taking them to doctors' appointments, school, work, and wherever they needed to go. I was responsible for giving them their medicine; sometimes they would refuse to take it. In such a situation, I was required to approach them three different times to find out why they didn't want to take the medicine to help them stay healthy, physically and mentally. A few girls threatened to kill me; however, communication was always necessary, and letting them know I cared was essential. On occasion, I was switched to the boys' cottages.
Responsible for devotions before the start of school, taught English, Consumer Math, and Social Studies. Liaison between co-workers and students.
Taught core courses for the boys to take and pass their GED. On this job, I had to have "eyes in the back of my head". Once, I had to leave the classroom for a moment or two, and money helping to turn their lives around, they would leave that facility and go to prison. I felt especially good about having 10 boys earn their GED certificates!
I had to remain calm and let the person(s) know they were loved and that their lives were valuable. I assured them that they were created in God's image and that they are unique. If they wanted to talk about a husband, wife, children, etc., I let them know they were being extremely selfish for leaving those who loved them.
