Research

Microbiology Laboratory, May 2023 - Present

  • A lab studying the amount of COVID-19 present in the wastewater in different areas of Marquette. Learned how to use ddPCR equipment and how to interpret results. For my thesis project, I looked for antibiotic-resistance genes in Marquette's wastewater. This involved culturing bacteria on agar plates with antibiotics, extracting the DNA, performing ddPCR, and looking at Carba-5 test strips to determine the expression of resistance genes.

Forensic Research Outdoor Station (FROST) Research, 2023 - Present

  • I assisted in muscle sampling and became apt at making observations about insect activity and new stages of decomposition occurring. I also learned how to take scientifically quality photos of the donors to assist in future data write-ups. This was my first experience with human research, and caused me to carefully reflect on the ethics of human research through individuals who generously donated their bodies to the betterment of future practice.

Neuropsychopharmacology Research Laboratory, 2020 - 2022,

  • A lab dedicated to studying the effects of drugs such as gabapentin on rats through lever-based training. Comparative effects of other medications were also investigated. In this lab, we also practiced reading and discussing scientific papers and peer-reviewing other scientists' papers.

Affiliations

Associated Students of Northern Michigan University, 2019 - 2022

  • Served as President, Vice President and Director of Public Relations. Worked with university and student committees to make NMU a more accepting and diverse community. My projects include making LGBTQ+ services more accessible to closeted students, incorporating spots for diversity in our assembly, and expanding menstrual hygiene products to all bathrooms. I also helped with registering students to vote, assisting students with absentee ballot applications, and hosted skill-builder presentations with a Michigan State Representative to discuss importance of civic engagement. I have promoted the Career Closet services that allow each student one free professional outfit, planned the One U.P. Conference that allowed U.P. student governments to connect and get ideas from each other, and directed the Public Relations committee so that more students could know of the services we provided.

Voter Friendly Campus Committee

  • As part of my student government commitment, I prioritized civic engagement. I spearheaded Northern’s Voter Friendly Campus designation for the 2022 - 2023 year and assisted with these efforts during 2020 - 2021. At this time, a satellite office was established on campus for students without reliable transportation, and we provided stamps and envelopes to encourage civic participation from students from different socioeconomic statuses. NMU saw a 16.5% student voter increase during my executive board terms.

Pre-Medical Club, 2019 - 2021

  • Served as Vice president, Increased my knowledge of what classes I should take to get into medical school and practiced MCAT test taking. Also participated in suture clinics and other events for hands-on medical experience.

Big Brother Big Sister, Fall 2019 - Spring 2020

  • I mentored a middle-school aged child to increase their sense of involvement and community. Bothwell's branch was specifically geared to those having a hard time fitting in or struggling to see their potential. I found this a meaningful experience because I also struggled in middle school, and being able to tell people in similar situations that life really does get better and more fun was incredibly fulfilling.

Study Abroad Experience

San Jose, Costa Rica

  • I studied abroad in San Jose, Costa Rica from January to April 2023 where I was able to learn healthcare vocabulary and see how a clinic and hospital operate in another country. This three month experience granted me a cultural understanding and acceptance I could not have received any other way. I grew in my knowledge and use of the Spanish Language, and was even able to navigate my own doctor's appointments, and describe my syncope episodes and chest pain in Spanish. I learned the value of "Tico Time" and how it prioritizes family first and foremost. I feel very privileged to have experienced a culture where respect is key to each and every interaction, be it with family members, elderly people, or even the environment.
